Today marks the 34th Anniversary of when the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, which gave civil rights protection for people with disabilities. For children today who don’t know a world without the ADA, we recognize the determination of the activists who demanded change. We also recognize that there is more work to be done. On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to sharing our knowledge, skills, and advocacy so that every child can access services and opportunities for healthy development. In this inspiring episode, we sit down with Elham Youssefian, a visionary in the realms of disability rights and climate advocacy. Born blind in Iran, Elham recounts her journey overcoming educational barriers, supported by her family and vital braille resources, to becoming a human rights lawyer. She explains the essence of disability-inclusive emergency preparedness, drawing from her personal narrative to highlight its critical importance and the common oversights in current emergency plans. With a focus on the intersection of disability rights and environmental action, Elham discusses the unique challenges faced during emergencies, the potential of technological advancements to transform lives, and the role of governments and organizations in ensuring accessibility. This episode, titled "Inclusive Futures: Bridging the Gap Between Disability Rights and Climate Advocacy," is not just Elham's story but a call to action for inclusivity, empathy, and innovation in addressing global challenges, making it a must-listen for anyone passionate about creating a more equitable world. As we celebrate #NationalDisabilityEmploymentAwarenessMonth, I reflect on the journey of disabled individuals, including myself, in a world that often limits our potential. Society's view that disabled people are fit only for administrative roles is a belief I challenge every day. Though this observance may not be widely recognized in Malta, let’s all take a moment to recognize the achievements of disabled individuals and work together for a more #equitableworkforce. #DisabilityEmployment #InclusionMatters #BreakingBarriers #DisabilityAdvocacy #NationalDisabilityEmploymentAwareness #InclusiveWorkforce

Excited to see my chapter on #disability cause lawyering at the #ECtHR go live. Together with Harvard Law School Project on Disability associate János Fiala-Butora and ED Michael Ashley Stein, we apply lessons from disability #causelawyers in the U.S. to important cases on #voting rights involving #personswithdisabilities. Hopefully, we can stimulate some further thinking and research on what it means to be a "global disability cause lawyer": https://lnkd.in/gQ27sKSA

Hey everyone! It's important to speak up – now you can! The government wants to hear what you think about the next budget for 2024–25. It's your chance to help decide what the country spends money on. Do you care about helping people with disabilities? Ask the government to spend $91 million to support them. By doing this, we can help our friends and neighbors who need it. 📝 It's easy to tell the government what you think: Disability Advocacy Network Australia (DANA) Ltd has created a tool to do this. Fill in a form with your ideas, your name, where you live, your email, and if you want, your phone number and any group you're part of. Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference! Press Conference Urges Changes to Bill C-62: Ensuring Rights for All Ottawa, February 23, 2024 Yesterday, #InclusionCanada, and a powerful coalition of disability organizations, including the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD), DAWN Canada, and ARCH Disability Law, gathered at the National Press Theatre to address a critical matter: Bill C-62. Bill C-62, currently under consideration, has significant implications for medical assistance in dying (MAiD). Here’s what you need to know: Currently Bill C-62 proposes delaying the availability of assisted suicide for individuals with mental illness until 2027. This provision raises concerns about fairness and access to end-of-life options. The bill includes a “sunset clause,” which sets a firm date for the automatic legalization of MAiD for mental illness. However, disability advocates argue that this clause is problematic and limits flexibility. Disability Organizations are urging lawmakers to pass Bill C-62 by March 1st, but with a crucial amendment: a full repeal of the “sunset clause.” By doing so, Canada can ensure that MAiD for mental illness remains a matter of individual choice, not an arbitrary deadline. Track Two Repeal: Additionally, we advocate for the repeal of Track Two, the discriminatory MAiD provisions affecting people with disabilities who are not at the end of life. Everyone deserves equal access to compassionate care.
