Building Sustainability into Product Design thanks to Digital!
80% of the environmental impact for a product is determined during the design phase. Accordingly, it is imperative to ensure #SustainabilityByDesign.
To do so, leveraging #CollectiveIntelligence and #Digital, Sustainability needs to be embedded at each of the 5 steps of the design process:
1️⃣ #ConceptualDesign: Designing for sustainable outcomes involves meeting new requirements like C02 emission, Energy or water usage or recyclability, which should be tracked to assess the performance of the design process. This holistic approach, especially in industries like battery manufacturing, helps businesses make better decisions by balancing material efficiency, cost, and environmental impact.
2️⃣ #SuppliersSourcing: Establishing robust selection of suppliers based on their ability to meet sustainability requirements and using product lifecycle management (PLM) applications to properly compare their environmental impact with significant cut in their emissions while boosting efficiency in parallel.
3️⃣ #DetailedDesign: Using #DigitalTwin solution, engineers can properly select materials based on properties and sustainability scores, allowing for rapid design iterations and better understanding of sustainability impacts. Simulating products alongside production systems can identify improvements, enabling innovative design exploration and significant efficiency gains in the real world.
4️⃣ #Validation: Validating a product's performance involves thorough testing of innovative materials and geometries to meet sustainability targets and using new data to optimize simulation models. Leveraging digital enterprise streamlines validation, enabling real-time data optimization, efficient maintenance schedules, and answering key sustainability questions through digital technologies.
5️⃣ #DesignImprovement: Integrating sustainability goals into product design ensures continuous improvement, making it easier to identify performance gaps and upgrade paths using simulation data and digital twins. This approach not only enhances environmental impact but also reduces operational costs, increases material savings, and boosts customer satisfaction and investor interest.
