#Barbie ’s return to the limelight this year may just well see the dolls top this year’s bestselling toys, according to Regent Street retailer #Hamleys. Ahead of the Christmas shopping season, the toy seller said it expected a trend of adults seeking nostalgia from the toys of their childhoods to drive sales this winter. “We’ve closely observed the trends shaping the toy industry, including toys inspired by beloved on-screen characters and the continued kidult trend,” the retailer said. As a result, the #PopRevealFruitSeries of Barbies, at £27 per doll, won top spot in Hamley’s list of ten frontrunning toys heading into Christmas. This was up from fourth on the list in 2022, following this year’s blockbuster film, which had scored earnings of US$1.4 billion globally come September. After reading a post last week about toy trends for the holidays, specifically about new toys (Bratz, Miniverse, etc) vs old school toys (Nerf, Hot Wheels etc) I was very curious to see what parents plans were. So I asked 500 parents how likely they were to buy each of 9 different toys this holiday season! While this shows a moment in time, what I would really be curious to see is how much these numbers have changed over the years and if there are trends one direction or another. Does my kid have way too many toys? Absolutely. Do I think they’re getting cheaper? Uh... I’d like to see the research on that.   It’s anecdotal, but at least for us, the prices on the types of toys we do buy have gone up. As a household that consistently bought LEGO from my youth to it being my child's primary toy, it's price is definitely higher. And as my kid is suddenly into action figures as well... I am not sure what happened there either but the days of a little bit of allowance to buy a new Spider-Man figure are over, with those now running at least $20-$30 per figure. "DC Comics' market share in comic stores continued its decline in Q2 2024, dropping below 20%, as the spread between the Big Two continued to widen. DC’s share dropped by nearly four percentage points between Q1 and Q2 2024, going from 21.6% in Q1 2024 (see "Comic Store Market Shares - Q1 2024") to 17.8% in Q2. DC’s dollar share for all of 2019 was 29.23%, according to Diamond Comic Distributors (see "Marvel Dominates Share"), over 10 points higher. Meanwhile, Marvel Comics saw a slight increase in its market share for the second quarter of 2024, going from 38.9% in Q1 to 39.2% in Q2. If you spend any time on collectors forums, you’ll find stories of people sending in a damaged card for a replacement and getting a rare card in return. It’s often a cause of consternation for collectors: Why aren’t these rare cards out in the wild? Why would a company just sit on them? The truth is making sports cards is a complicated process. During manufacturing, cards can get damaged. Oftentimes, we’ll create more than we need to ensure that we get the amount of production that we actually expect. At the end of manufacturing, you end up with extra cards. Sometimes those are high-end inserts and chase cards.  Other times, sealed cases and boxes are damaged in transit and refused by shops who don’t want to risk selling boxes to collectors who may have damaged cards.  The only thing that can be done with these is to open them up and use the cards as replacements.  Additionally, there are cases of cards that we open up internally for quality control analysis. Those extra cards also go to the team for replacements. It’s just the reality of the process. Collectors might not find that to be all that satisfying, but it’s just the reality of how the sausage gets made. #innovation #community #tradingcards

“It Will Not Be An Odd Movie” – Deadline https://ift.tt/htP1JFl 2023-10-01 07:51:08 Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz is weighing in on the forthcoming Barney movie that has Daniel Kaluuya hooked up. “It’s too early to be specific, but I can tell you we are taking a fresh approach that will be fun, entertaining and culturally oriented. It will not be an odd movie,” Kreiz informed Semafor in an interview. Mattel is leaning in on producing movies primarily based on their IP and earlier this 12 months Mattel Films government Kevin McKeon teased that the Barney movie could be “surrealistic.” “We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids,” McKeon stated in an interview with The New Yorker. “It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney—just the level of disenchantment within the generation.” Following the success of Barbie, Kreiz stated the Greta Gerwig-film was “part of a holistic strategy, a multi-year strategy, to capture value from our intellectual property.” Other movies Mattel is growing embrace a Hot Wheels movie with J.J. Abrams, a Matchbox Cars undertaking with Skydance, a Major Matt Mason film with Tom Hanks, a Polly Pocket movie by Lena Dunham starring Lily Collins and Vin Diesel with Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.
