Reflections from my second week on the job market:
First of all, I want to thank all the people that engaged with my first post. It was emotional in reading people's experiences through this job market. I now have more folks to root for in hopes that you all obtain the roles that support your purpose, values, and skills. Folks mentioned the following that I am still sitting with:
⭐ Gather your people in reading and reviewing resumes, practicing for interviews, and gaining knowledge on their experience (thank you Shannon Stockdale, Joel Portillo, MBA/M.Ed, Thomas Munoz, Dr. Philonda Grant, PCC, ELI-MP, Orpheus Williams, Ph.D., Sia Smith-Miyazaki)
⭐ Continue building skills through free programs, certifications, and professional development
⭐ Be strategic! My good friend Joel Portillo, MBA/M.Ed recommended this book to me: The 2-Hour Job Search by Steve Dalton, which has expanded the way I tackle these as tasks to elevate opportunities. It is a different environment than I anticipated and seeing different strategies is helpful. https://lnkd.in/gfT6pEyR
⭐ My friend Joshua Rivera mentioned to me that 80% of new hires come within the first 20% of applications. Set your filters to newest roles only with your specific search criteria
⭐ Continued optimism through rejection. This says more about equitable hiring practices versus what we have to offer. I appreciated the optimism that people are holding and expressing to each other.
From this week:
➕ Added 5 more applications (newest only and being selective since they take up so much time)
➕ Was given a second round interview from an organization. Have to create a presentation for this next task. (Glad to be seen!)
➖ I received 11 rejection emails, and I met the criteria in all of them. I see how the created assumptions spiral in our minds and hearts through these moments.
Orgs Need to Stop
🚩 If you are going to require that applicants provide hours of written and video materials to your process, you cannot say "we cannot provide you feedback." People just placed hard worked hours researching, reflecting, practicing, and submitting work that was unpaid.
What I wish for...
💡 In this moment, I have not had one phone call or interaction through video with any organization. That human connection matters and I am wondering how do we humanize our structures in a rapidly changing society? I'm also curious on how orgs advertise themselves as human centered and yet do not fully connect? Is email enough connection for us? 🤔
Thank you again to folks that have provided your perspective, vulnerability in your experience, and the positive energy to continue going. I appreciate you all. I am going into this week with more purpose, to continue expanding my own creativity, and to continue being me, because that is all I can ask for. Hope you all have a wonderful week searching, interviewing, and getting offers!
Thanks Adam Udell, PHR we love supporting our candidate community!
