Historically, beer brewing was a female dominated business conducted by alewives. As beer brewing operations scaled up during the Industrial Revolution, men took over the manufacturing process. In 2021, only 2.9% of breweries had female-only ownership. An Arizona-based non-profit aims to reclaim women's place in the brewing industry. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gcSzfcGE The article includes an interesting aside about an old paternalistic Michigan law (which has since been repealed) that banned women from working as bartenders unless their father or husband owned the bar. When two women bartenders challenged the constitutionality of the law in 1948, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Michigan statute in a 6-3 decision.
