The other day, the local Rotary Club with which I am associated embarked on a special project that combined artistry, environmental consciousness, and community engagement. We organized an eco-friendly Lord Ganesh idol-making session for students from Class 2 to 4, and the results were nothing short of inspiring! The session was guided by a skilled trainer from Shanti Niketan, who not only taught the children the art of making these beautiful idols but also shared the science behind using eco-friendly materials. The children learned about the significance of each part of Lord Ganesh's form, connecting the creative process to cultural and spiritual values. The enthusiasm of the young participants was truly contagious. Their excitement in crafting their idols was so vibrant that it even encouraged the adults present to join in and try their hand at idol-making. The smiles on the children’s faces and the infectious energy they brought with them highlighted a profound lesson: enthusiasm and a willingness to learn can bridge generations and inspire innovation. Key Takeaways for Adults: 1. Embrace Curiosity: Just like the children who eagerly learned about eco-friendly materials and cultural significance, staying curious and open to new experiences can rejuvenate our creativity and passion. 2. Lead by Example: By engaging actively and with enthusiasm, adults can set a powerful example for younger generations. Our participation showed that learning and growth are lifelong journeys. 3. Foster Community Spirit: Activities like these strengthen community bonds and highlight the importance of collective learning. It is a reminder that we can all contribute to a greater good and inspire one another. Gratitude to everyone who participated and made this event memorable. Let us carry forward the lessons learned and continue to nurture creativity, eco-consciousness, and community spirit in all our endeavours! When was the last time a child sparked a spontaneous reaction from you? #EcoFriendly #CommunityEngagement #CreativeLearning #SustainableLiving

Accessibility Tip of the Day 173: Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)! Here are some ideas for how you can celebrate: - Register for the "GAAD 2024: Accessibility Fundamentals Bootcamp" two-hour webinar from Deque, happening today, May 16, 10am-noon PT (https://lnkd.in/dwBTs8v7). - Read through some of my past accessibility tips on LinkedIn by searching for the #accessibilityTipOfTheDay hashtag. - Buy and read a book on accessibility and inclusivity. Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design (https://lnkd.in/dhmFnABj) and Designing with the Mind in Mind (https://lnkd.in/ddrDAupQ) have been two of my favorites that I've read this year. - Audit your current feature or project for accessibility issues, and make a plan to address them. - Find more info and ideas on the GAAD website (https://accessibility.day/). Thanks for being a11y allies! #accessibility #a11y #accessibilityTipOfTheDay

The publication of Jamie Oliver’s "Billy and the Epic Escape: is a reminder of the responsibility that people in positions of influence - teachers, writers, publishers, and all content creators - have to ensure that First Nations-related stories are treated with respect. The issue was not just the book itself, but the entire process that allowed it to reach bookshelves without any meaningful engagement with First Nations communities. While it is disappointing that First Nations people had to bring attention to these harmful representations about themselves, NATSIEC is pleased to read that Oliver seems to be taking actions to make amends. Cultural safety is developed through representation that is accurate and First Nations-driven, so readers feel seen, respected, and our cultures valued. To that end, we urge those in education, publishing, and media to turn to the "AIATSIS Guide to Evaluating and Selecting Education Resources: as a practical supportive tool. This guide offers crucial practices for respectful and culturally safe content creation, including: - Participation: Engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices from the outset to ensure authenticity and integrity. - Positioning: Representing First Nations people and cultures in ways that avoid generalisations, honouring the rich diversity within our communities. - Integrity through Self-Reflection: Committing to ongoing self-reflection to identify and address personal biases that may shape content. - Consultation: Actively seeking guidance from traditional custodians and knowledge holders for accurate, respectful storytelling. - Rights and Ownership: Respecting Indigenous rights to control and protect cultural heritage, with proper attribution of stories, knowledge, and images. - Language and Terminology: Using respectful language that is free from stereotypes and offensive terms. - Ethical Standards and Impact Assessment: Evaluating the impact of resources on First Nations audiences to support cultural safety. Content creators should always be looking for ways to improve their professional practice, ensuring that First Nations voices are genuinely honoured and that all readers experience authentic and respectful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander portrayals. 🔗 Read more in the article here: https://lnkd.in/dg9z5jkx 🔗 Access the AIATSIS Guide here: https://lnkd.in/dndXYXwV
