A Fifth Wheel for Parking? A 1930s Innovation Ahead of Its Time Ever struggled with parallel parking? You're not alone! Turns out, the solution might have been invented way back in the 1930s. Brooks Walker's "vehicle lifting and traversing device" aimed to make parallel parking a breeze. It was a clever idea, but unfortunately, the car industry wasn't quite ready for it at the time. While Walker's fifth wheel for parking didn't become a mainstream feature, it was a significant step forward in vehicle maneuvering technology. It paved the way for the innovations we see in cars today, making parking much easier and safer. You actually don't need a 5th wheel and can do this with only 4. As long as each wheel can independently rotate. Look up zero turning radius or pivot turning. Older examples of this kind of turning can be seen in concept cars like the Merc Benz EQG, Rivian R1T and R1S. And more recently in production luxury cars like the BYD Yangwang U8 2024
