🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea has increased the proportion of women on boards and in senior executive positions since 2021, but still lags the Pacific averages for women in business leadership in 2024. PSDI has just released an update to its 2021 report, Leadership Matters: Benchmarking Women in Business Leadership in the Pacific. Leadership Matters 2024 finds that although more women are moving into business leadership positions, the rate of progress is slow, and Papua New Guinea remains below regional averages for all measures of women in business leadership. Only there are 9% of women in mid and senior management in Bangladesh whereas it's 23 for Maldives, 25% for Srilanka and 22~41% for ASEAN! On the contrary, 89% of women in managerial staff in Bangladesh have the ambition to take on leadership roles. Hope we can minimize the gap and catch up the global equitable and balanced leadership target (40:40:20) by turns. It was worth attending the Peer Learning Session on 'Promote Women in Leadership' organized by #IFC.

Increasing representation of women in senior leadership positions is not only good for businesses but also good for the economy. Findings from the recently issued Leadership Matters 2024 report in PNG, indicate women directors in PNG grew from 19 per cent to 23 per cent and the proportion of women CEOs grew from 5 per cent to 9 per cent. The report produced by the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (Asian Development Bank), a joint initiative of the Australian Government, New Zealand Government and Asian Development Bank, captures progress around women’s representation in business leadership in the Pacific. “Everyone can use the information in the Leadership Matters 2024 report to inform our efforts to grow women’s business leadership in Papua New Guinea. And that’s the power of a report like this,” said Australian High Commission Minister Counsellor, Ms Diane Barclay. The share of reported female directors increased by one percentage point from 31% in 2022 to 32% in 2023. Studies show that companies with more women on boards have higher returns on equity, higher valuations, lower likelihood of shareholder dissent and stronger boardroom relationships and collaborations. On this #internationalwomensday2024 , I would like to acknowledge the work that TheBoardroom Africa is doing to provide and prepare women leaders to take up board and executive leadership opportunities. TheBoardroom Africa has placed over a hundred women on boards, investment committees and executive teams. I have personally benefited from their executive programs and have increased my knowledge in finance which continues to serve me well as a board member and chair of credit and audit&risk committees in the boards that I serve on. #inspireinclusion #leadershipdiversity

Women's leadership is thriving in Benin! In a recent group discussion, I witnessed the incredible power of female leadership. Despite being under-represented, a group of women led the way with flexibility, framing, decision-making, and consensus-building. Africa Leadership Legacy continues to advocate for women Leadership inclusion through the various projects that it undertakes. This year we join the world in celebrating International Women’s Day under the theme “Inspire Inclusion”.   As of 2022, 32% of senior management roles globally are held by women. This is the highest number ever recorded (Theus, 2022). However, women are still underrepresented compared to their presence as 50% of the population. Even with this minority percentage, women in leadership are greatly making positive strides to benefit organisations and the communities they are found in.   Since 2023, Africa Leadership Legacy has been carrying out leadership research including a series of interviews titled “Meet the CEO”. We have interviewed CEOs from various parts of Africa with 92% of our CEOs being women. During this Month of Women, we showcase some of these women CEOs we have interviewed and see their response to the question we asked, “Do you believe that women are sufficiently represented in leadership?”   Their answers will be on the posters we shall be posting to honor them.   Let us all Inspire Inclusion as we celebrate women today!
