🔵 Addressing Substance Use Disorder (SUD) within the Criminal Justice System: A Call for Comprehensive Support 🔵 Substance Use Disorder (SUD) intersects with the Criminal Justice System in significant ways, impacting individuals' lives and communities. It's time to address this issue with compassion and comprehensive support. Too often, individuals struggling with SUD find themselves caught in a cycle of incarceration instead of receiving the help they need. Let's advocate for policies and programs that prioritize rehabilitation, treatment, and support services for those battling addiction. By investing in evidence-based interventions and diversion programs, we can break the cycle of incarceration and provide a pathway to recovery and reintegration into society.. Join the conversation. Let's work together to ensure that everyone, regardless of their involvement with the Criminal Justice System, has access to the resources and support needed to overcome SUD and rebuild their lives. If you are a lawyer or a criminal justice professional and would like to learn more about Addiction Recovery Services reach out to Joshua Colwell, CRSW today to schedule a zoom call or a meeting to learn about how you could use us as a resource for your client! #SubstanceUseDisorder #CriminalJusticeReform #Rehabilitation #CommunitySupport #EndTheCycle

Could you tell the difference between prison/jail and mandated “treatment”? ("Treatment" is the photo on the top.) We all agree that treatment is an important response to people struggling with addiction. But mandated treatment often causes more harm than help. Some of these “treatment” facilities are prison-like environments where healing is impossible. Studies have shown that mandated treatment can increase harms, including overdose risk. People deserve effective treatment rooted in respect, not punishment. Treatment options must exist in a continuum of care that addresses diverse needs. https://lnkd.in/e8JfzEiy

Someone with a substance use disorder (SUD) has three options: jail, death, or recovery. Through four personal stories, this documentary shows you the stark realities of this disease and the hope for anyone with an SUD. Adam is a person in long term recovery who has rebuilt his life against all odds. Christine is a mother who lost her son to addiction and now dedicates her life to helping others fight this disease. Chief Tom Synan, the Newtown Chief of Police, applied his experience serving the community to create the Hamilton County Addiction Response Coalition. Dr. Schmidt helps patients through recovery and makes it clear that patients have three options when fighting addiction. Interested in learning more? Today we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day by demonstrating strong support for individuals who struggle with addiction and their families. Hundreds of Delawareans lose their lives to addiction every year, so having Naloxone on hand when every second counts save lives. That’s why four years ago the DOC partnered with the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services to offer Naloxone kits free of charge to individuals on probation and to individuals upon their departure from a state prison facility. Each kit distributed comes with two doses of the life-saving drug and a short in-person training by medical staff on when and how to properly use Naloxone. To-date, the Delaware DOC has distributed more than 10,500 Naloxone doses (5,250 kits) to individuals released from prison, probationers, their families, and others. Learn how to obtain your free naloxone kit through the DOC Community Naloxone Distribution Program by e-mailing: DOC_Naloxone@delaware.gov or visit https://lnkd.in/eBqnMEXg. 🔍 The Hidden Intersection of Addiction and Criminal Justice As a seasoned professional in counseling and addiction treatment, I've observed a critical need for understanding the complex relationship between substance abuse and the criminal justice system. The Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling is at the forefront of exploring this intricate connection. Key insights from recent research: • 65% of incarcerated individuals meet criteria for substance use disorders • Evidence-based treatment in correctional settings can reduce recidivism by up to 40% • Trauma-informed care is essential for both addiction and offender counseling As counselors and policymakers, we must push for integrated approaches that address both addiction and criminal behavior. The journal's focus on prevention, treatment, and counselor attitudes is crucial for developing effective interventions. What innovative strategies have you seen in addressing this dual challenge? Let's discuss how we can bridge the gap between addiction treatment and criminal justice reform. #AddictionCounseling #CriminalJusticeReform #EvidenceBasedPractice

Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, let's reflect on the freedom that comes with overcoming personal struggles, including addiction. The drug crisis in American transcends all cultural, economic and racial barriers, affecting all our communities; however, African American neighborhoods and families are hit harder. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, African Americans are overrepresented among drug abusers in the United States. According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), African Americans have the highest use of marijuana. Unfortunately, 90% of the black groups diagnosed with a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in the US did not receive addiction treatment (Yale School of Medicine). Let's use this day to support those in recovery and to raise awareness about treatment options. Greenbranch Recovery is a leading alcohol and drug rehab with individualized outpatient treatment plans. It’s time for a new approach that restores balance! We are all frustrated and have had enough with the random violence, open air drug use and constant social disorder! Drug addiction is a complex health emergency and much needs to be done to help people stay safe and recover, but the crime, violence and disorder that drugs bring into our community has to be addressed even while we work on other solutions. Why not act on this sooner? In truth, it took a lot to bring us to this point. Suspended bylaws, covid, a federal decision to not prosecute for drug possession have been seen as permission to use illicit drugs in any setting, failures of a justice system to hold violent offenders accountable, budget cuts that reduced resources across all front-line work environments, and anti-police rhetoric that have left members feeling unsupported have all contributed. It's been a bit of a perfect storm, but it's time to clear a path out of this current state. More of the same is not the answer! While responding to violence over the past several months, we've received additional funding from the Provincial Gov’t for HELP Navigators and PACT teams to help us divert the vulnerable from the justice system and a commitment for 50 new officers. We see a plan moving on recovery systems and we know we need more, but in the short-term these new teams and the facility we feature in this video below, are helping to connect those who are willing to get services to receive them. This partnership with Radius Health in our Integrated Care Centre helps by providing a place to take people where they can get assessed and connected. We are going to hear more on these matters this week, including important new justice initiatives from the Province to support our efforts to keep violent people in the justice system. These pieces together create the right system to really make a difference now. The other clear factor that is different today than in 2020, is the overwhelming, almost unanimous support of the community to do things differently - recent city surveys showed near unanimous concern with open-air drug use. When it comes to the random violence, gang violence, open air drug use that has increasingly taken over public areas, we need to swing the pendulum back in our community's favour. I want to be clear that every officer, lawfully placed, will have the full support of everyone at EPS to this mission. Those who commit crime and victimize others will be held accountable! These people are hurting Edmontonians including our most vulnerable, and creating a level of disruption that is unacceptable to everyone. Business owners need to feel safe to open their doors in the morning and walk away at night. People need to feel safe to ride transit or enjoy our parks and trails. We get what we tolerate, so it's time to tolerate much less violence and disorder in our public spaces. More to come soon! https://lnkd.in/gXMeigcQ
