Driven by corporate ESG agendas, digital transformation, and societal demands for energy transition, these disruptors are reshaping the landscape and presenting a threat to established brands. To thrive amidst scarcity and regulatory uncertainty, larger players are turning to strategic mergers and acquisitions (M&As) to swiftly acquire new capabilities. Meanwhile, smaller entrants are leveraging M&As to access new markets, customers, and capital. These types of strategic M&As aren’t new though. Whilst we’re currently aiding one of the world's largest energy corporations to integrate a prominent EV charging company post-acquisition, 10 years ago we helped the same parent company achieve their $2.5 billion synergy target whilst integrating a 5,000 FTE $50bn upstream production company. Niche consulting firms, with a sharper focus on value outcomes (and less on activity) are redefining partnership with their clients. I am seeing this new style of consulting disrupting the business models of established players. This is true for all of the transformation challenges that we work on, but recently we have seen greater demand for support in designing and executing complex post-merger integration. Big organisations are turning to strategic M&A for growth in a challenging economic cycle. Smaller players are looking for accretive value and access to new markets. We've worked with organisations, both large and small, to help them to solve the challenges of effective integration. Every big change is different, but at the core the disciplines required are common and repeatable. Translation to the specific context is everything! Energy and focus on 'the deal' and getting to the close if of course critical, but that is the effort to get to the start line. There is much more work to be done to realise the true value of the deal over the following week, months, and sometimes years.
