Mergers have taken center stage with news of Big Law partners voting to approve tie-ups of large firms in the span of six days. If the work isn’t important why are there 400 #attorneys on the team? Hmm weird. It’s ok to talk about the disconnect(s) in the legal field. We SHOULD. So this little hypothetical isn’t so little and actually is not hypothetical. I know of an ongoing #ediscovery project with FOUR HUNDRED contract attorneys on the team. Yet people insist discovery projects aren’t important, “don’t count as legal work,” are “just busy work…” whatever people say these days. Multi billion dollar, multinational companies have FOUR HUNDRED contract attorneys doing busy work on their major mergers and acquisitions? Then the 400 attorneys get penalized for “not having experience” afterwards? Who hires 400 attorneys to do “busy work?” And whose fault is that exactly? Let’s stop derailing peoples’ careers for doing the best they can to get experience and distribute the work so they actually get it. And this doesn’t even begin to get into why I am working on discovery reform. But I hope it’s #upyouraly for now.

Something different from me for a Friday - mergers and acquisitions of law firms. I regularly post about Partner vacancies, but another area of specialism for me is mergers and acquisitions. Currently seeing a fair bit of activity in the market: - Firms looking for substantial growth over the next 3-5 years which is not possible through lateral hires alone, hence an appetite for M&A - Succession planning. A number of law firms have identified significant succession planning issues whether that's more junior partners not in the equity to succeed senior partners, or whether succession is just not viable due to property ownership. - Tight profit margins and a struggle to retain profitability. This has proved especially difficult for some law firms who are more focused on residential property who have seen significant drop-offs in work. I am currently working with a number of law firms currently looking to merge with or acquire others: - A mid-size law firm is looking to merge or acquire law firms in the £500,000 to £4million turnover range. Open to any areas of law a firm focuses on, except for legal aid work. - A law firm open to acquiring any law firm of £4million+ turnover range with no upper limit.
