I have completed a comprehensive three-month training in Bioinformatics with H3ABioNet. This extensive program has equipped me with advanced skills in areas like databases, Linux, sequence alignment, genomics, and molecular evolution, which are essential for my ongoing research. As part of my PhD, I'm assessing the state of gorgonian populations and understanding the impact of anthropogenic pressures on these species. Our article "Wiring between close nodes in molecular networks evolves more quickly than between distant nodes" is published in Molecular Biology and Evolution as an accepted manuscript. Collaboration with my amazing doctoral student Alejandro Gil-Gomez (this is one of Alex's dissertation chapters). We propose to use the evolution of drug-drug interaction scores as a proxy for the evolution of the topology of the underlying biological networks of a bacterial cell. We test this idea by using data from a previous study that measured thousands of these scores for dual drug combinations across species. Mapping biological networks in detail is enormously costly experimentally, while mapping drug-drug interactions is much cheaper and there is evidence that such interactions depend on network topology. Our main result is that drug-drug interactions that are synergistic tend to be closer in E. coli molecular networks, and these interactions tend to evolve faster than nodes that are far apart in the network. Mystery Droplets We all learned about membrane-enclosed organelles inside plant and animal cells during high school biology class: For example, the nucleus contains the organism’s genetic material and mitochondria power the cell. But not all organelles have membranes enclosing them–some exist in the cell’s cytoplasm as concentrations of proteins or other biomolecules. These “biomolecular condensates” exist like bubbles of oil in water. How it works: Biomolecular condensates form when the thermodynamic energy balance within cells is favorable. They are also part of crucial biological processes. For example, green algae have a biomolecular condensate called a pyrenoid within each chloroplast that has a high concentration of enzymes needed to convert carbon dioxide into sugar for energy.
