Just another example of the ongoing competency crisis. Incompetence is endemic in the western workforce, effectively enabled by cultural trends and social conventions about the meaning of work and, more broadly, life. “You deserve a paycheck” is an integration of the new western mantra: “you deserve”. You deserve happiness, you deserve comfort, you deserve to get your way. Your actions have no consequences. The real question is how much more entropy can this system handle before it collapses. I guess we can all keep pretending that the next generation will be able to prop up our institutions. We’ll find out soon enough one way one or another.

Early in my job search, I was offered a role booking bands and musical acts for weddings, corporate events, festivals and nightlife. I had been looking for a career path for months, and this particular company was offering $10 an hour plus commission (with room for growth) for this full-time role, and although that was much lower than I expected, I was excited to learn that part of the business. That is, until they put an Non-Compete on the table in front of me, and told me there would be a 6-month “trial period” before commissions started. To make matters worse, that Non-Compete stated that, should I leave OR be eliminated from the role, I would not be permitted to pursue ANY event industry role that involved selecting entertainment…for 5 years and within a 500 mile radius of Philadelphia. I’m thankful for Bob Kieserman - a professor at Arcadia and my first event client -who helped me see through the promise of “a job in events” and explained the reality of this absurd agreement. I declined the job and, although it would be 6 more months of juggling half a dozen part-time jobs before I found my first events role, I had once again learned a valuable #jobsearch lesson I didn’t forget. Now, the law challenges non-compete agreements, but those who are still searching: make sure you read every single line of every single form during the interview and onboarding process before signing! You never know if predatory tactics are hidden in those documents. And: if something feels wrong in your gut, listen to that feeling! #millennial #careerjourney

It happens the other way as well, Tyler! I fully agree with you. I had an online interview with an HR Manager recently who started off with, “I haven’t done a deep dive on your resume”. Said another way, “I haven’t looked at your resume or prepared in any way for your interview. And this was one I was recommended by a colleague and happened to be in my group of “really want this one”. I felt like stopping the interview to set up another time when the person could be more prepared, but that would be the same as saying that I was no longer interested (likely right?). And I had done a deep dive into this companies history, everything. Just wanted you to know it happens on both sides. *what I liked most about your post is you are willing to wait for the right person. 200%. I can’t tell you how many times my teams have been short-staffed and I’ve been asked, after a round of interviews, which candidate I was going with. Answer: none. Follow up question: How come? Answer: none of the candidates is right for the role. Peace! Good luck with your search!
