Aviel Avenante Law Practice’s Post

There’s a common misconception that only marriages conducted at federal registries, such as the Ikoyi Registry, are recognized by the government and accepted at embassies for those planning to travel abroad. However, the reality is quite different. Marriages performed at any licensed local government or public place of worship are legally recognized by the government. It’s essential for couples to understand that they can obtain their marriage certificate from any recognized and licensed place of worship. The Ministry of Interior, which is responsible for marriages, issues a universal form to couples marrying in licensed venues. As long as the marriage certificate meets the legal requirements, it will be recognized by the government and accepted at embassies. Couples should research and find a licensed and acceptable place to get married. In the past, some local governments issued certificates under their own names, leading to issues at embassies. This contributed to the misconception. For example, I married at the Shomolu local government, and the certificate I received was identical to the one my older sister who married at Ikoyi, received. This shows that the certificate’s validity is consistent regardless of the location. Choosing a licensed and less crowded place for marriage can help avoid the stress and overcrowding often encountered at federal registries. My experience was smoother and quicker compared to other experiences I had heard of due to the long wait at the registry. Therefore, I advise couples to consider these factors for a more enjoyable experience. Ultimately, my wish is for every couple to have a stress free and enjoyable wedding.
