The Stackoverflow developer survey is published. This survey provides insights into thinking of the global developer community. Also shows the power of a community. It is great in many ways, not only it reflects current situation in 2024, but also it reflects future. In my opinion, this survey was also very important for Stackoverflow, to get insights about existential threat from Gen AI tools, but now considering the results, it's usage & evolvement is postive, around 65k developers responded to survey from which 76% have stackoverflow account with 93% per month per multiple visits per user. In my opinion, the Stackoverflow is great community of developers, and that's the biggest strenght they have, and serving answers to your questions comes at 2nd as per impact & priority. Key findings of survey are: - Demographics: Developers mainly from the US, Germany, and India; predominantly male; mostly aged 25-34. - Education: 66% have a BA/BS or MA/MS degree; 82% prefer online resources for learning. - Technologies: JavaScript, Python, and SQL are top languages; PostgreSQL is the leading database. - AI Tools: 76% use or plan to use AI in development; ChatGPT is highly favored. - Work Environment: Hybrid work is stable at 42%, with a rise in in-person work. - Future: 62% are using or used Javascript, APIs are 90% choice of developers, Rust is evolving language with 83% choice rate, 70% don't think AI as a threat, Erlang developers are highly paid in 2024. https://lnkd.in/eBN93SUj The results are in! Stack overflow is a platform where a lot of software developers go to ask and respond to really technical questions. They do a massive survey every year and ask the developers a ton of questions and put it in neat charts for us to see. Here are a few stats that stood out to me. 70% of professional developers do not perceive AI as a threat to their jobs. 50.3% of programmers learn to code from Books/Physical media. Javascript is still the most popular programming language, behind that is the markup language HTML and CSS, then Python Amazon Web Services is the most popular Cloud Platform Node.js is the most popular web framework this year, just beating out React The Rasberry Pi is the most popular Embedded Technology. Vim is used by 21.6% of programmers. Microsoft Teams is the most popular communication tool 9.8% of programmers are using a version of Debian Linux. ChatGPT is the most popular AI Search Rust is the most admired programming language with a 83% score this year. Each user who is learning to code wants to try 12 other languages in the next year. Erlang is the top-paying technology with an average salary of $100,636. Assembly Language only has an average salary of $60,834. 76% of developers are using or are planning to use AI tools in their development process this year. 72% of respondents are favorable or very favorable of AI tools for development. 81% agree increasing productivity is the biggest benefit that developers identify for AI tools Similar to last year, developers remain split on whether they trust AI output: 43% feel good about AI accuracy and 31% are skeptical. Similar to last year, developers remain split on whether they trust AI output: 43% feel good about AI accuracy and 31% are skeptical. The number of hybrid developers has stayed consistent this year with last year (42%), while the percentage of developers working in-person has increased (20%) for the third year in a row compared to 15% in 2022 and 16% in 2023. Most developers code outside of work as a hobby (68%), and almost 40% code outside of work for professional development or self-paced learning from online courses. 61% of all respondents spend more than 30 minutes a day searching for answers or solutions to problems. Most developers work in cloud-hosted or hybrid environments (86%); 14% work with solely on-prem environments. Technical debt is the top frustration at work for professional developers according to 63% of respondents, regardless of whether they are an individual contributor or a people manager. It was really intriguing to get a wide-lens view of the industry, it definitely put things into perspective. #technology #software #programming #coding #stack #overflow #webdevelopment #cybersecurity #backenddevlopment #gamedevlopment #engineeer #python #c #erlang #industry #career #javascript

StackOverflow survey 2024 just dropped https://lnkd.in/gdJT_XbW. More people head to the office (20% vs 16% last year), AI search is admired (75%) and plan to use more next year, and AI is not a treat to developer's job (70%). More interesting things beyond what is on the surface: - 🇺🇦 Ukrainian developers constitute 4.6% of respondents (5th by the total number of respondents). Shows you that despite the effort of ruzza to depopulate the country, Ukrainians keep on coding! - Younger people (>24 y.o., 85%+) use online resources to learn much more than older (<65 y.o. 67%). Not a surprise in itself, but I did not expect that applies to developers as much. - On the same subject as previous, 84% use "Technical Documentation" to learn how to code, and in that 90% is "API document and/or SDK document." Who would think that documenting your API can be useful... Seriously though, this is the thing that will be filled by GenAI more and more, since summarization, is its forte (summarizing code and other assets as documentation). - The bell curve of years of codding moving to the centre. Not a surprise, but it may be that the number of developers might start reaching a plateau in my lifetime. To clarify, it used to be that the chart was leaning more heavily to the less number of years, meaning, there are more developers with fewer years of experience than with more. I.e. humanity produces more developers per year than previous years. - Also, years of coding professionally decreases the longer respondents coded, meaning coding used to be a hobby a lot more than now. Young people do not code for fun 😭. - Full-stack developers (30.7%) are the largest population by a huge margin compared to the next type, Back-end, just 16.7%. My guess is, a lot of companies do not want/can't afford specialization for their engineers, so you become a "jack of all trades." - Despite skepticism, usage of AI tooling increased (62%) compared to the last year (44%), and respondents think AI tooling will be more integrated in their work. - Professional developers feel that AI tools increase productivity (83%) more than people who are learning to code (73%). But pors also trust AI tools less (42%) than folks who learn to code (49%, "highly trust" + "somewhat trust") There is so much more in there, I would recommend everyone who has anything to do with this industry, take a good look!
