According to a 2016 study by Applied Logistics, a full 75% of manufacturing defects result from nonconformance with processes. It’s part of what makes LPA programs - which focus exclusively on process standardization - so effective at reducing quality costs. Automotive OEMs like GM and Fiat Chrysler require their suppliers to conduct LPAs, which are also recommended by Ford. As a proactive approach to reducing risk that makes management accountable for quality, LPAs help demonstrate compliance with standards such as ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 as well.

This week, the SS&M Mexican team worked hand in hand with the Corporate Logistics and Supply Chain team to identify improvement opportunities to be executed during FY25. As with every time we conduct this event, a large list of ideas was generated, capturing data on the current state, future state, implementation dates, and next steps for each one. However, what stood out in this process was the methodology used. After several years of carrying out these initiatives, we now have a mature team that understands the process and knows where the opportunities will be. This synergy allows us to evaluate easily the feasibility of the ideas and calculate not only the savings but also the workload required to achieve them. I want to thank each participant in this event, and at the same time I want to congratulate the team on this example of teamwork between different internal and corporate areas. You have already identified nearly 70% of your target, and there are still many ideas left to quantify. We will meet again for a 2nd Round to go the extra mile and identify more opportunities beyond what was expected. The process is called Continuous Improvement, and it flows smoothly when you have a strong group of CI Thinkers! Customers like Ford, GM, Bosch and others in the automotive industry have dramatically reduced supplier audits and visits since COVID. I discussed this at length with one of my former bosses who works at one of them. No wonder there are so many powertrain and component quality problems. Lean manufacturing bit us also especially in the computer chips area and complete supply chain. A commitment back to closer hands on management of the supply base is needed. Process audits and hands on problem solving like before COVID is required. Try being a team again and a positive resource. It was done when implementing every quality standard in the past. The industry has lost focus. Firefighting and being reactionary are the old way and we are better than that. The Toyota Production System should always be the standard to benchmark against. I don’t hear of massive recalls of their products.
