The Unseen Heroes of Conference Prep: A Family Affair As we gear up for an upcoming conference, I'm reminded that adaptability is the name of the game in business—and life! We had a little hiccup with our promotional materials: our playful, designed-to-stand-out playing cards didn't quite hit the mark on arrival. But every challenge is an opportunity in disguise, right? Instead of wasting HUNDREDS of card packs, we introduced a simple, yet effective fix—a bold solid color background to make our message pop. The tweak was perfect, but the clock was ticking. The execution? It required a multitude of steps and a tight turnaround. Here's where the magic happened: our amazing kids transformed into a powerhouse of productivity. 🌟 Unpacking, trimming, gluing, repacking, taping, labeling, and hauling—each step was carried out with enthusiasm and precision. Their energy was infectious, and their dedication was second to none. The result? Decks of cards that didn’t just meet the original vision but exceeded it. (No, I won't share the details here! This experience was a powerful reminder of the strength and resourcefulness that lies within our personal networks. A huge shout-out to my family, the unsung heroes behind the scenes. I was sad to read about the death of Harrison Owen (1935-2024), a generous pioneer in working with others in organizations. His work on Open Space Technology came to mind as I was thinking about the power Emmet Kelly’s amazingly simple clown routine had on audiences. Owen’s approach to working with large groups in organizations allows people to select where they want to spend their time during one of these events and then change their minds if they begin to lose interest in a topic. It may sound like chaos, but it’s not. In fact, one risk I found, was my own desire to facilitate conversations when it seemed like these meetings were breaking down. Once I learned to shut up, I was struck by how well people could get along quite nicely without my so-called help. There is only one rule. It is the Law of Two Feet. When I was part of open space meetings, I loved – absolutely loved – that law. Here’s how OpenSpaceWorld.org describes it: “You, and only you, know when you are learning and contributing as much as you can.” It reminds us that “If you find yourself in a situation where you are neither learning or contributing, use your two feet, and/or whatever you use to get around, to go somewhere you can learn and contribute more.” If you’d like to know more about Harrison Owens’ work, I encourage you to wander around the Open Space World website (https://lnkd.in/e76yZcBq).

Four years ago, I traveled to Florida for my company's annual conference. We were still living in Wisconsin (my husband and I were both born and raised there and never lived anywhere else) and we'd grown very restless over the previous few years. At the end of the conference, the CEO took the stage and asked us to close our eyes and envision what we wanted MORE of in 2020. I closed my eyes and thought about how I wanted more sunshine, more adventure, and more time spent outside in my life. I had never even been to Arizona at that time, but somehow it was laid on my heart that we'd move there. The picture I saw in my mind while sitting in that arena was very clear: My feet up on a lounge chair, my backyard pool just beyond my feet, and my kids jumping in as I watched. Ten months later we were living in Arizona, we'd moved into our home, and I experienced that exact vision that I had seen. It still gives me chills sometimes when I'm out there and realize how I'm living the exact vision I once only saw in my mind. This is the power of visualization. I've experienced it, and I know how impactful it is... and yet I still often struggle to make it a regular practice, and to have the clarity I need to see what I desire next. Recently I went through a short and powerful exercise that helped me break through that struggle. I'll share it with you tomorrow!
