I can give my experience and what I have seen. But, I would really like to give some inspiration around the art of the possible! How do we achieve genetic improvement? Selection and mating the best to the best is a laymen's answer. What about when what is 'best' changes? Keep selecting. What if we lose our genetic diversity from which to select? Then we are in trouble... As are some of our breeds of livestock that may not be competitive in today's production systems and mainstream markets. But they matter, and they represent a wealth of genetic diversity. And there is an organization focused on preserving these breeds: The Livestock Conservancy. Why am I posting about them here? I had a conversation recently with a young lady who is working in a swine related product manager role for a large multinational animal nutrition company. She was clearly an intelligent and ambitious person…no nonsense but very likable. She was highly educated having earned two degrees (Animal Science and Animal Nutrition) from well regarded agricultural universities on two continents. In the course of our discussion, it came out that she had only visited one swine farm in her life and had visited no farms in her home country, the one in which she was working. This is, unfortunately, increasingly common. The reasons are many, but strict biosecurity requirements for farm entry is one of them. Another is the lack of emphasis on hands on experience in the education system. We need to address this as an industry. Anyone working in a technical or technical-adjacent role in a company servicing the pork industry and anyone having a relevant education to such a role, should have at least a basic working knowledge of how a swine farm works. This cannot be understood without at least a minimal, boots on the ground, exposure to a working farm. Getting people hands on experience in the education system and in the corporate training system should be a major priority. Candidates for these positions used to be overwhelmingly farm kids who already had this experience. Increasingly, that’s not the case and…frankly, we have a bunch of people going around giving advice without understanding the context. I don’t blame the students/employees. Sure, they should take the initiative to pursue opportunties to gain practical experience but the system doesn’t make this easy. I’m working on a partial solution to this problem. Welcome to our Living Lab – PEI #ParticipantProfile Series! 👏👀 First up, we have Catherine Pal, an Animal Handling Research Technician on the Beef and Forages Research Team at the Nappan Research Farm! 🐮 1. Introduce yourself My name is Catherine Pal, and I am an Animal Handling Research Technician on the Beef and Forages Research Team at Nappan Research Farm! We have been involved in a lot of really interesting research since I started with John Duynisveld (AAFC Biologist) in 2015. My responsibilities are pretty broad here, which is something that I enjoy about this job; I would never describe this job as boring! John involves me in almost all project related activities, from initial project planning meetings, to work planning and execution of the day-to-day tasks involved in project set up, data collection, lab analysis, statistical analysis interpretation to summary preps for reporting. I also attend workshops and field days to chat with people and hear about their challenges and successes. A lot of our research is related to the Living Lab – PEI BMP 1: Livestock Feeding Strategies. We are currently entering the seventh year of a managed grazing study, we help out with the Living Lab – New Brunswick community pasture managed grazing project, and we've just recently wrapped up a really neat project involving feeding PEI sourced kelp to pregnant beef heifers and then measuring the impact on their methane emissions. 2. What do you like most about being part of a living lab? I like being a part of something that really matters; healthy food for the growing population matters and farmers and their families matter. The things that we discover through our studies here matters to farmers. I think that everyone wants to have a job that they know is helpful and important and can help someone to make a good management decision for their business. I like knowing that we are working on things that can give farmers more information which could help them make decisions for their farm management with less risk to themselves than if we weren't here testing problems and potential solutions. This post resonates deeply with me. As part of the last generation of Animal Scientists who entered college with extensive on-farm experience, I have witnessed firsthand the shift in our industry. My background includes: - Raising my own sows - Working on a 1,500-acre farrow-to-finish farm for several years during high school and college - Experience on a farm near Clarks Hill, Indiana while at Purdue, doing tillage and working in sow barns The landscape of Animal Agriculture has changed dramatically! In my childhood, hog farms were ubiquitous in my county; now you can count them on one hand. The opportunities to cultivate "Good Farm Kids" like we did in the past have dwindled significantly and many of those that do exist are choosing non-ag careers. Reflecting on my most successful customers, I have noticed a common thread: they do not treat livestock raising as a mere transaction (Feed at 9, breed at 11, lunch at 12, leave at 3). Instead, they've honed subtle skills in Animal Husbandry by observing others over time. For them, it is second nature—a part of life, not just a job. Recognizing the value of hands-on experience, we started a flock of sheep when my eldest daughter was a preteen. That flock has now grown to 40 ewes. The lessons my three children gained from this experience are invaluable: - Daily feeding responsibilities - Experiencing life in real-time: pulling lambs, bottle feeding orphaned ewes - Facing the heartache of losing a lamb - Enjoying the thrill of thriving twin lambs While my children may not have had the best grades in college, these experiences with our flock have made them successful in their jobs at Neogen Corporation and Fletcher International Exports Pty Ltd. Their hands-on knowledge gives them a practical edge that classroom education alone cannot provide. The critical question Todd asks and one we face now is: How do we address this growing lack of experience and innate animal husbandry knowledge, especially among those we now rely on as "experts" in our industry? This challenge is particularly pressing as we lose the generational knowledge that once formed the backbone of our field. Maybe Todd Thurman is on the right path with his project.
