What is the VALUE OF HUMAN LIFE? Does it change with age? How can someone approach saving a life from a place other than emotion? Science has helped us do a lot of things today but it cannot reverse ageing. That is why health is and will forever be important. Food and lifestyle help maintain health but there are factors that surprise you. In the battle with ageing is one that mankind continues to lose. We have a saying When wealth is lost, nothing is lost When health is lost, something is lost To restore health or to even manage it, we need money. Lots of it! While health insurance helps you, there is a limit to it. In my own close personal circle, I have seen people lose half their savings to one bout of illness. People who take care of two generations are slowly becoming extinct. That being said, how much would you spend to save an elder? How much would you spend on a lost cause? Emotionally there is only one answer but what if we thought of it logically?  1. Would you spend your kid's college fund on a terminal cancer patient?  2. What amount or part of your savings would you spend to extend the life of your parents?  3. What would you do to plan your healthcare and retirement? What advice would you give your kid when they face the choice? I honestly don't have an answer. In the battle between emotion and logic, I pick my battles. At work, I side with logic. Massive growth opportunities in non-life premiums could be seen as our addressable market is just 1/4th penetrated v/s the world. India's Premium to GDP is just 1% which is too low. The premium per capita is also at 1700 compared to 17000 in China and 2 lakhs in the US. Huge opportunities lie ahead for India's per capita growth. That is the reason why the overall non-life insurance industry is growing at 15% double-digit growth and private players are able to increase their market share from 0% in the year 2002 to 37% in the year 2008 and are currently at a 51.4% market share. Insurance: A Hurdle in Investment Journey: I was speaking to a client recently (senior lady ~55 years) and she showed me her investment portfolio.I was shocked to see that she was investing half of her Salary in an Endowment Insurance Plan which would not give her any return nor give any coverage.The irr of her insurance plan was ~4.5-5%% and she would get her money when she turns ~70 The best part was she was not married and had no children to leave anything behind.Why would you buy an Insurance plan when you have no dependents is what I didnt understand? She told me that someone very dear came to her asking for help and she helped him in this way. Now she is stuck. She asked to surrender her policy but the insurance company is only offering her 50% of the amount as a breach of contract.
