I recently had the opportunity to give a keynote at a CEO summit for a private equity firm focusing on mid-market investments, with some larger ventures in the mix. The discussion highlighted varying phases in companies' approaches to AI investments. It's evident that AI democratization remains a challenge, especially for small to mid-market enterprises due to the high cost and the complexity of many applications of AI. Key takeaways: - Successful AI adopters concentrate on a few high-impact workflows. - Rethinking workflows is crucial to unlocking AI's full value, avoiding mere toy implementations (which comes from focusing on use cases). - Managing the complex AI landscape requires an orchestrated operating model and ecosystem, transcending individual teams. - The real value of AI lies in enhancing decision-making, beneficial for mid-market enterprises that may not see an ROI from automation. - CEOs play a pivotal role in driving AI initiatives, CIOs are typically not in a position to drive the change needed to realize value from AI. - AI investments demand meticulous care and maintenance, significantly more than traditional software projects, and consequently are significantly more expensive. - Company-specific data integration in AI models offers competitive advantages over off-the-shelf solutions, pivotal for sustainable success. Sadly, innovators sometimes embrace empathy for users but not their own org. That blows up in their face in the form of blindspots. Innovators who set themselves up for success realize: People who don't gush over our work aren't bozos. Take them seriously! Concretely, the Google researchers showed us: 💰 Corporations need innovations that are cheap and instantly high-performing. 💼 Expect the broader org to be just lightly interested in your work (even if it's good), as one interesting effort in a broader portfolio. 🕳️ It's perfectly rational for executives to dismiss work that requires self-cannibalization. 🧐 Even–and especially–smart, competent outsiders may reject good ideas, especially ones that counter current orthodoxy. 🏃➡️ Even great success does not ensure longevity of innovation teams. 👉 Want more? Generative AI - a tale of two stories According to a survey of 1,200 CEO's.......... The majority of CEOs (Singapore 61%, global 70%) are accelerating GenAI investments to maintain competitive advantage - no surprise Two-thirds of CEOs (Singapore 66%, global 68%) say GenAI uncertainty creates challenges for adoption - also no surprise It will be interesting to see how CEO's approach the adoption challenges, right now many are rushing in without a plan 🛑 But how best to create a plan, when you have never done this before and neither has almost anybody else? 🤷♂️ Well if everybody can just calm the farm for a second, they might realise we have plenty of examples of how to approach this, to name just a few: 1. Digital transformation programmes 2. New venture creation 3. Strategic partnerships They all have their pros and cons, but calm heads will previal.
