#Assessment plays a critical role in the teaching-learning process. The National Education Policy (NEP)2020 recommends several perspectives to improve assessments, one being to minimize the ‘one shot’ summative assessment and to improve upon formative assessment that promotes understanding of students' learning process, and develop tests which assess higher-order skills such as analysis, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity. The importance of assessing higher-order thinking skills cannot be overstated, high-level, open-ended test items lead to improved student understanding. Thoughtful test items, which encourage critical and creative thinking as well as problem solving help challenge and thereby facilitate the cognitive development of students. Using effective questioning skills, teachers can understand and nurture the intellectual abilities of every student. Lower level questions are usually appropriate for evaluating students' preparedness and readiness to comprehend, diagnosing students' strengths and weaknesses, and reviewing and/or summarizing content. Higher-level questions are appropriate for encouraging students to think deeply and critically, problem-solve, stimulating discussions, and to seek information on their own. Teachers are often preoccupied with questions such as, "How can I engage students in higher order thinking?" How can I scaffold students' learning so that they progress from fundamental knowledge to deep comprehension? How can I encourage students to become more self-directed learners? It is necessary to familiarise teachers with the concept of higher order skills and to develop their competencies in developing higher order test items. One of the key areas of #PARAKH is to support teachers and resolve their dilemmas concerning learning assessments, equip #teachers to prepare exemplar 'Competency Based Assessments' at the Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary. Practicing teachers, teacher trainers, resource teachers from various types of schools located in different parts of the country can engage themselves as resource persons. Persons having expertise in their subject areas (Languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science) from State government schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalyas (JNVs), Demonstration Multipurpose Schools (DMS) attached to Regional Institute of Education (NCERT), Army Public Schools and private schools and others. can act as resource persons. To qualify to act as a PARAKH resource person in developing ‘Competency Based Assessments’ go through the #PARAKH #HolisticProgressCard at https://lnkd.in/eF3TCHNW and prepare 5 ‘Competency Based Assessments’ detailing the activity and the rubrics and send to PARAKH by post.
