For Lebanese architect Jeffrey Mouawad, who designed this Beirut apartment as an ode to the beauty in simplicity, a blend of inquisitiveness, discovery and personal expression has resulted in a signature style focused on refined details. “Achieving a distinct design identity has been a significant milestone in my career,” Mouawad told AD. “It validates my creative journey, and underscores my commitment to authenticity and innovation. While I embrace the individuality of each project, I also incorporate signature elements that define my style.” Full tour below. https://lnkd.in/dnfV_8jq

ibit.ly/iQi_G #STIRfriEXCLUSIVE STIR speaks with Yara Sharif and Nasser Golzari of the Palestine Regeneration Team (PART), for their exhibition ‘The Power of the ‘Invisibles’’ at Sharjah Architecture Triennial 2023. The discourse centred around essential inquiries that carry a weight of necessity: — How important are an individual’s identity and personal experiences when working in a colonised and scarcity-ridden landscape? Can an outsider ever equitably and ethically contribute towards the welfare of the populace in such regions? — How can architectural projects and interventions be used to subvert the occupation? — How can the colonised re-embrace aesthetics that are specific to their histories and lived realities? PART is a platform for key academics and practitioners who want to open up the dialogue about Palestine and make a contribution either through their intellectual input or practical engagement with specific design and regeneration projects. Their showcase in Sharjah illustrates the alternate usage of various materials (such as rammed earth, crushed concrete from the rubble, and recycled timber) salvaged from the ruins. Out now! Bauwelt 5.2024 Über Exzesse in der Architektur, Kontrollverlust, Schönheit und Desaster . Over the next few days, we would like to take you on a journey through Beirut. We start with the French Mandate. . After the end of the Ottoman Empire, Lebanon came under French mandate administration from 1920 to 1943. The architectural legacy of this period remains visible in the city centre, particularly in neighbourhoods like Ashrafieh. Western architectural elements were blended with neo-Ottoman styles, creating an eclectic fusion. The increasing use of concrete allowed for the embellishment of facades at minimal expense – marking the onset of architectural eclecticism. . Today, Lebanon’s building laws trace their origins to the French Mandate period. However, the amendments made over the years have prioritized maximizing the use of built-up areas rather than fostering the development of quality urban spaces. Historic buildings, afforded scant protection, are being replaced by new luxury residential towers in affluent districts like Ashrafieh. . Throne of my lonely niche, My wealth, my love, my moonlight. My most sincere friend, my confidant, my very existence, My Sultan, my one and only love. The most beautiful among the beautiful ... My springtime, my merry-faced love, My daytime, my sweetheart, laughing leaf ... My plants, my sweet, my rose, The one only who does not distress me in this room ... My Istanbul, my Karaman, the earth of my Anatolia My Badakhshan, my Baghdad and Khorasan My woman of the beautiful hair, my love of the slanted brow, My love of eyes full of misery ... I'll sing your praises always I, lover of the tormented heart, Muhibbi of the eyes full of tears, I am happy. This is a poem written by Süleyman the Magnificent (pen name: Muhibbi) to Hürrem Sultan. Süleyman was the emperor in the golden age of the Ottoman State. This building named after him carries a history through architecture. The Süleymaniye Mosque is an Ottoman imperial mosque located in İstanbul. The mosque was commissioned by him (1520–1566) and designed by the imperial architect "Mimar" Sinan in 1550. It is considered a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture and one of Sinan's greatest works. I made this model in 2002 for my master's study about the rule-based design theory of Sinan. Beyond being an academic and technical work, it is one of the reasons for me to become an architect. The erasure of colonial-era architecture, leaving large voids in what many have come to consider as their own intimate heritage – part of their own history – can be seen playing out across Libya. The country’s capital, Tripoli, is going through a similar restoration and modernisation process, albeit a more gradual one and without any incidents of overnight bulldozing. Instead, many heritage and colonial-era buildings in the old medina have been, or are in the process of being, restored. However, Tripoli’s restoration has not been without controversies of its own. To many, it seems to be only a surface-level operation, lacking in expertise to ensure the buildings are preserved authentically. But it is not only experts who should be involved in the restoration of landmarks and important buildings. The engagement of local communities is vital to strike a balance between preserving heritage and challenging the colonial narratives which are often associated with such landmarks. #libya #culturalheritage #controversy #colonialarchitecture #landmarks #restoration #retention #preservation Khalid El Harrouni TinHinane BACHIR-CHERIF Rim Kelouaze Amina Rejeb Hossam Mahdy Jonathan S.
