Helping all students navigate college admissions. Working with them to think broadly, apply wisely, learn, graduate and make the world a more just place.
Located in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and just across the Charles River from Boston, Harvard University offers a unique college experience that blends a campus atmosphere with the dynamics of urban life. Harvard offers more than 50 undergraduate fields of study, referred to as concentrations. These range across various disciplines, giving students ample choice. Additionally, students can complete one of 49 secondary fields, complementing their primary concentration or allowing them to explore interdisciplinary interests. The curriculum is designed to be flexible and comprehensive, allowing students to delve deeply into their chosen fields while also encouraging exploration across different areas. The House system is a signature feature of the Harvard undergraduate experience. Ninety-eight percent of all undergraduates live in one of the twelve residential Houses. Each House accommodates 350-500 students and offers its own dining hall, common rooms, and facilities for academic, recreational, and cultural activities. The Houses serve as a foundation for Harvard's community and intellectual life, hosting various activities and traditions. They offer lectures, seminars, weekly language and interest tables, and various cultural and social opportunities. This system is designed to forge a link between living and learning, providing a vibrant community life beyond the classroom. There are over 450 officially recognized clubs for the 7200 undergraduates, including academic and pre-professional clubs, cultural and identity-based clubs, performing arts clubs, community service and outreach clubs, and special interest clubs. Some well-known clubs are the Hasty Pudding Theatricals, Harvard Model United Nations, The Harvard Crimson, Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, Harvard College Consulting Group, Harvard College Chess Club, and The Harvard College Film Society. Harvard is committed to affordability for all admitted students. It is need-blind when making admission decisions, and financial aid covers all demonstrated need for students, regardless of citizenship. Families with incomes under $85,000 a year pay nothing for their student's education, while those earning between $85,000 and $150,000 pay a percentage of their income. Harvard does not offer merit aid. By applying wisely, building confidence, and getting it right, I help students on their journey to college admission success. Larry: as you might imagine, I would have to respectfully disagree with this assessment. My own experience over four decades, and my own reading and reflection on the ongoing issues, would suggest otherwise. I can agree with the idea that the higher education system in America is an outstanding enterprise worthy of praise and respect, and has many quality public and private institutions, beyond those that have elite name recognition, and at the same time hold the competing thought that there are serious challenges that merit the attention of our smartest professionals. This includes what I see as the partisan way too many approach the work of education in the college setting, which has resulted in flagging public confidence in what we do. I do not believe this can all be written off to disinformation, false narratives and conservative enemies with axes to grind. I also do not believe that circling the wagons and putting blinders on will serve higher education well down the road. We can have this discussion in a rational way without disrespectful, ideological name calling and conspiracy proclamations, which too frequently characterize the exchanges. When people engage in this way, they are no better than the fringes they complain about so often. I am with you on the rankings though!!
With apologies to those who can’t access this article, I share it as yet another example of the folly of aspersion casting on colleges and universities. IMHO it’s as bad as ranking systems that attempt to characterize an entire institution with a single ranking number. I’m amazed at the lengths people will go to tear down arguably America’s best asset…higher education.
