How Mars Bar Used Neuromarketing to Boost Sales by 20% Ask anyone in brand, and they'll tell you that branding is more than just a logo. It's about building a deep connection with your audience so that your brand stays stuck in the mind. But how do you actually do that? Here's how Mars nailed it. In the early 2000s, Mars faced a challenge. Despite the Mars Bar's popularity, research showed that women weren't buying it as often as men. To figure out why, Mars partnered with a neuromarketing company to study how consumers reacted to different aspects of the Mars Bar. The findings came as a shock, the shiny foil wrapper was triggering a negative emotional response in some women. They associated it with guilt and indulgence, conflicting with their desire for 'healthier' choices. Mars had a perception problem. Mars recognised that our brains make snap judgments based on visual cues, even if we're not consciously aware of it. By changing the wrapper, they subtly shifted the emotional response associated with the product. This move wasn't just about changing the look, it was about understanding and addressing the needs of their audience of women. By removing the 'guilt', Mars made the Mars Bar more appealing to a wider demographic. • Moral of the story? Don't just assume you know what your customers want. Invest in research and truly understand their motivations and desires. • It's all in the details. What I realized I’m starting to see a lot of them following and it’s making me Cringe: 1. Generic Visual Elements: - Noticeable similarities in logos, color schemes, and typography across various brands. - A tendency to adopt similar design trends without personalization. 2. Homogeneous Marketing Campaigns: - Replication of marketing strategies, such as influencer collaborations or storytelling approaches, leading to a lack of distinctiveness. - Mimicking successful campaigns without tailoring them to the brand's unique story. 3. Template-Driven Websites: - Widespread use of similar website templates, resulting in a lack of individuality. - Overreliance on standard layouts and designs common to specific industries. 4.
