20 years ago, I told my husband that the day he became Managing Director of a company, I wanted to write a book inspired by him. It would be called "Fra Lærling til Leder" (From Apprentice to Leader) and would look at the common success factors of people who work their way from entry level positions to the top leadership of companies. He thought I was crazy. He had no intention of ever becoming a director of anything. My intuition told me otherwise. Peter went to 3 years of Danish technical school to become a Stainless Steel Welder and Fitter. No engineering degree. No MBA. He's literally worked his way through this industry from the factory floor up. There was never a grand plan or big goal. It just happened. After observing Peter's career over the last 25 years, I have some theories as to how people like him rise to the top: 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 When you've worked at every level, you have respect for people at every level. Peter once visited a work site (as Director of Operations) and the welders said it was impossible to do a certain weld. "Give me the machine..." He laid down on the floor in his dress shirt and slacks and taught them how. The easiest part of Peter's new role will be hiring the best talent, because I don't know anyone anywhere that doesn't want to be on his team. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰 Although he does sometimes miss the days of clocking out (mentally and physically) after a shift, it's very difficult for him to stop until a job is done to his high standards. 𝗟𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 If Peter is needed, he is there. Always. That goes for work and home. 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 This is a big one. People think Peter and I are an odd match. He's very introverted and observant. He listens. He thinks. I talk. We go to a dinner party and on the way home he tells me exactly who has honest intentions and who is putting on a show. It's not a gut-feel thing for him. It's ethnographic research. I call it the "Peter test." He's never been wrong. I really should listen to him more often. 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 When you've worked on projects across 5 continents, you quickly learn a lot about culture. Coupled with Peter's observational skills, he picks up cultural nuances very quickly and adapts his language and behavior to context. 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Peter is probably one of the most down-to-earth people you'll ever meet. No ego. No big show. Just gets the job done. I know this little love note will embarrass him (I often embarrass him), but please join me in congratulating Peter on his new role! I'm SO proud. D2 hit the jackpot finding him at just the right time. I'm so happy to watch him step into this new role even though it now means I officially have ANOTHER book on my to-do list. To get me started on my research, what other success factors do you think people like Peter share? #newjob #career #leadership #success
I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining the new Singapore office of D2 Process Limited as Regional Managing Director. D2 Process already has a great presence in the region and I can’t wait to meet with many of you soon to discuss current and future projects. I’ll be touring the region over the coming weeks, so do reach out if you have time for a chat or would like to hear more about what we can offer. I want to sincerely thank all of you in my network who have supported me over these past months. You’ve opened doors, made connections, invited me for discussions and interviews or just for a chat to check in. I will never forget your kindness. I couldn’t be happier about starting this new chapter and am looking forward to what 2025 (and beyond) will bring!

After leading multicultural teams across 16 nationalities, here's what I learned about how 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 in tech: 🇯🇵 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: unmatched technical precision, their attention to detail and methodical approach set the gold standard in technology. 🇺🇸 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: masters of talent leadership. They excel at identifying and nurturing top talent, creating the perfect balance of tough but fair leadership. 🇯🇴 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬: natural-born solution sellers. They possess an uncanny ability to articulate ideas and bridge conflicting viewpoints, making them exceptional at getting buy-in for technical solutions. 🇪🇬 🇳🇬 𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 & 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: the autonomous problem-solvers: ✔️ can find solutions for every problem, and do that quickly, as they are used to doing workarounds ✔️ they are extremely autonomous, they don't wait for someone to tell them, they solve it first and then get permission ✔️ very hard-working, as they find great value in being recognised for their ingenuity and work ethic. Egyptian and Nigerian developers thrive in European and US companies precisely because of their autonomous problem-solving approach! They don't wait for instructions; they take initiative. Anything I missed?

Working with a team from another country is more than managing different time zones or just saving money... It's about understanding cultural differences that affect how work gets done and getting the best out of it. To make the most out of global teamwork, it’s important to get these cultural insights right. There are big benefits to having an international team: you get to work with a variety of skills, save some money, and the mix of different ideas can lead to really creative solutions. It’s like having a key to access the whole world. Honestly, is THAT powerful. But... There are challenges too. And big ones! Cultural misunderstandings can cause confusion and slow down your projects. Just like in any good relationship, getting along well means understanding and respecting each other’s ways. Think of it like this: every relationship needs some ground rules. It’s the same with international teams—they need clear rules to work well together. So, you want to start accesing this world of opportunities with a culture pretty similar to yours, right? it only makes sense... It would help you avoid this big risk I keep talking about. You'd also prefer if you get some sort of partner or institution that was solely dedicated to help companies like yours discover this kind of opportunities... If only it was this easy...
