The book “Master Slave Husband Wife" by Ilyon Woo is a masterpiece that left an indelible mark on my heart. Adding to its richness is the fact that I’ve had a number of conversations with the author since it’s release (see link in the comment section below). Reading this book was like embarking on a journey through a pivotal chapter of American history, where love, courage, and the relentless pursuit of freedom intertwine in the most extraordinary way. The book recounts the incredible true story of Ellen and William Craft, a couple who turned the impossible into possible. Their audacious escape from slavery in 1848, with Ellen disguising herself as a disabled white man and William as her slave, is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. Woo's meticulous research and vivid storytelling brought their journey to life, making me feel as though I was right there with them, sharing in their fears, triumphs, and unyielding hope. What struck me most was the profound love between Ellen and William, a love that defied the harshest of circumstances. Their story is not just about escaping physical bondage, but also about the resilience of the human heart. As I turned each page, I was inspired by their unwavering determination to achieve freedom not only for themselves but for all enslaved people. This book is gaining widespread acclaim, and rightly so. Named one of The New York Times's 10 Best Books of 2023 and a bestseller, it has been celebrated by major publications and institutions for its impactful narrative. The Crafts' story resonates deeply with contemporary readers, reminding us of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality. In a world where freedom is often taken for granted, "Master Slave Husband Wife" is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made in its name. It challenges us to reflect on our values and the legacy of courage and love left by those like the Crafts. This book is not just a historical account; it's a beacon of inspiration, urging us to carry forward the torch of liberty and justice for all.

It's the first day of a new quarter, a new month and a new week. Happy new month guys! So... Reading has a way of expanding our perspectives and helping personal growth, and Q1 was a literary journey for me. I'm happy to have met my goal, in the first quarter of the year, of reading 6 incredible books - 2 each month - across different genres, and they are: 📚 "70 Great Christians: The Story of the Christian Church" by Geoffrey Hanks - An exploration of key figures who shaped the Christian faith through their courage, conviction, and commitment. 📚 "The Jewish Phenomenon" by Steven Silbiger - Insights into the "secret sauce" behind centuries of Jewish cultural and financial prosperity. 📚 "Eat That Frog!" by Brian Tracy - Despite its quirky title, this book is packed with no-nonsense tips for overcoming procrastination through prioritization and developing personal discipline. 📚 "Judge and Jury" by James Patterson - Leave it to Patterson to craft another legal thriller that had me rapidly flipping pages! At some point I had to turn to the last page to see if the main character made it to the end because my heart couldn't take the suspense 😅 📚 "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain - This book puts together humor, adventure, and social critique in a way that's as relevant today as it was when first published. Most importantly, it addresses issues of racism, morality, and societal hypocrisy, that forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about the world we live in. 📚 "Inclusive Transportation" by Veronica Davies - This was an illuminating read about designing transportation systems that are equitable, sustainable, and accessible for all people. What books have you been reading lately? Let me know in the comments. I'm always looking for recommendations to add to my ever-growing list!

My Book Thoughts The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck 🍇 Set in the harsh environment of The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl, John Steinbeck's classic 1939 novel tells of the Joad family and preacher Jim Casy's bleak trek across an impoverished and harsh environment. Around every corner is death, pain, heartache, police brutality, starvation, sickness, and lack of empathy. The further they go from Oklahoma, the more the group seems swallowed up by the country and it's darkness in the hopes of soon reaching the promised land of California. It's a daunting book that has to be read at least once. Though written for a specific time, set in a specific time, by someone who lived in that specific time, this piece of literature stands the test of time itself with issues relevant today in America. You need only read Cormac McCarthy's works or listen to Bruce Springsteen or Rage Against the Machine's "The Ghost of Tom Joad" to see how eternal his messages were. What I love about this book is how Steinbeck intersperses chapters comprised of monologues or dialogues without quotation marks. It puts readers outside of just the Joads, adding to the mindset of people simply trying to get by in an unforgiving world. Another thing I appreciate about it, is that the love, compassion, empathy, and humanity surviving in the bleakness of poverty and unregulated capitalism or capitalism entire. I love this book. This, "The Pearl", and "Of Mice and Men" are among Steinbeck's greatest works, and I recommend those too. I say definitely give it a read, even if just once.
