A few major ones include the recent establishment of the White House Office of Environmental Justice within the Council on Environmental Quality, the proposal of Phase 2 NEPA regulations that would require consideration of environmental justice concerns and the impacts on Tribal Nations in the review process, the announcement of $2 billion in funding through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Community Change Grants, and more. This year, it is expected that federal agencies will continue to prioritize environmental justice, particularly through funding and enforcement. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/eZtGwwME

[Public Comment Submission] “The Basic Policy for Environmental Conservation Activities, Encouragement of Willingness for Environmental Conservation, Environmental Education, and Promotion of Collaborative Efforts” (March 1, 2024) HGPI's Planetary Health Team and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Team submitted their written opinion on the draft of "The Basic Policy for Environmental Conservation Activities, Encouragement of Willingness for Environmental Conservation, Environmental Education, and Promotion of Collaborative Efforts" by the General Policy Division of the Minister's Secretariat within the Ministry of the Environment. Advancing environmental conservation activities contribute to developing a sustainable society, and it is important to encourage willingness for activities through efforts such as environmental education. Mutual collaboration between citizens, corporations, private bodies, and the State as well as local governments is also meaningful in environmental conservation. In June 2011, “The Law for Enhancing Motivation on Environmental Conservation and Promoting of Environmental Education” (“the Law”) was announced, which aimed to further promote environmental conservation activities and environmental education. In June 2012, the Cabinet decided "The Basic Policy for Environmental Conservation Activities, Encouragement of Willingness for Environmental Conservation, Environmental Education, and Promotion of Collaborative Efforts" (“the Basic Policy”) based on the Law. The Basic Policy is to be reviewed roughly every five years and amendment is under consideration. >> For more information https://lnkd.in/gmpsXxRT #PublicComment #EnvironmentalConservationActivities #EnvironmentalConservation #EnvironmentalEducation #AntimicrobialResistance #AMR #PlanetaryHealth #health #healthcare #healthpolicy #hgpi #japan

How are you progressing towards Environmental Justice in your work and research? Environmental Justice is an essential consideration for all sectors of our society. It is a starting point to build a future where all people have access to clean water, clean air, safe living environments, and access to the benefits of society. This means equal protections from hazards and wastes for all people, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or other imposed and historical power imbalances. The Whitehouse recently released the Environmental Justice Science, Data and Research Plan, with fours themes: Enhancing meaningful involvement and engagement of the public Fortifying just treatment, equitable access, and protection from environmental injustice Strengthening work and partnership with non-federal entities Institutionalizing environmental justice I am working my way through the 50-page document which contains many recommendations that inspire and align with my work. One example is from institutionalizing EJ: "...expanding staff training to include community engagement strategies and building multidisciplinary teams with expertise (including expertise gained through lived experiences) can help agencies better ask and answer questions relevant to advancing environmental justice." Does your work fit into these themes or outside of them? How does this plan and the concept of EJ in general make you feel?
