Inspiring news: SPUR #Ocean #Beach #Climate #Plan Takes Big Steps Forward In October, the Ocean Beach Climate Change #Adaptation #Project took major steps toward full implementation, with the #SanFrancisco #PlanningCommission's #certification of the #environmental #review, approval of the project’s alignment with the city’s General Plan, and approvals by the Department of #Recreation and #Parks and the San Francisco #Public #Utilities Commission. The project implements many components of SPUR’s #OceanBeachMasterPlan, which #envisions the #transformation of the #shoreline into a #resilient and #protected #open #space that #restores the #natural #habitat, protects #biodiversity, and provides new #pedestrian and #bicycle #access to the beach and #coastal #trail. For over 10 years, SPUR played a pivotal role in championing this project, working with #public #agencies, #community #members, and #stakeholders to #develop one of the #BayArea’s #first #sealevelrise #adaptation #plans. #placebased #onehealth #wellbeing #regenerative #sdgs #H20 #airshed https://lnkd.in/eQAmAMuJ

☀⚡🏙 check out great insights on #Community #Choice #Aggregations (#CCAs) in recent U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s National #Renewable #Energy Laboratory (NREL) published rankings of '#greenenergy' #sales thanks to David McNeil 👇
The US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently published rankings of "green energy" sales. Green energy is this case has renewable electricity content that exceeds minimum state requirements. 5 of the 10 largest sellers of green energy in the United States last year were Community Choice Aggregations or CCAs. CCAs are municipal entities created under state law to provide electricity and electricity programs to residential and commercial electricity customers. Fun fact: none of the CCAs listed below existed 10 years ago. Their meteoric rise up the Green Power rankings demonstrates the power of local communities to advance the clean energy transition. We need more of them. If you want to learn more about CCAs, Leanenergyus.org is hosting a national conference about CCAs October 8-10 in DC.

☀⚡ Check out the #US Database of Large-Scale #Solar #Photovoltaic projects 👇 thanks Michele Boyd
☀️💻 The United States Large-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Database (USPVDB), funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), now includes solar facilities operational through August 2023! This is the most comprehensive, publicly available geospatial large-scale solar facility database, covering nearly 4,200 large-scale solar facilities and representing approximately 90 gigawatts of generation capacity. This free, public resource is designed for use by government agencies, scientists, private companies, and other stakeholders for a wide range of analyses. Explore the USPVDB, download the latest data, or use the interactive viewer to visualize and engage with the most up-to-date information: https://lnkd.in/gfJ4HUCm 📷 And if you’re looking for some great #solarenergy photos, like the one below, check out the submissions from our Hit Me with Your Sun Shot Photo Competition: https://lnkd.in/gtkWwF3P

🌍 #Energy Demand for #Cooling in Global Cities to Skyrocket Amid Rising Temperatures 🌡️ A new report from World Resources Institute paints a sobering picture of our warming future, with global cities facing unprecedented challenges as temperatures rise by 1.5C to 3C. The consequences? Longer, more intense #heatwaves, devastating #droughts, increased disease risk, and soaring energy demand for cooling systems. Cities across the globe — from low-income areas to megacities like Tokyo, New York, and London — will experience drastic shifts. With 2.1 billion people at risk, the report underscores the life-or-death difference between 1.5C and 3C of warming. By 3C warming, heatwaves could extend by over a month each year in some regions, with cooling demands more than doubling for millions. This surge in energy use poses immense challenges for cities, especially in low-income regions and previously temperate climates. Now is the time for city leaders to prepare for a much hotter world, while slashing emissions to prevent the worst-case scenarios the World Meteorological Organization forecasts 2024 to be the hottest year on record. The time for action is now — our cities and the people depend on it. read the report here 👇 https://lnkd.in/e3pu-r9A

On CBC national radio last night, we discussed the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM)'s new draft flood maps. Quebec’s new flood risk classification system (from very high to low) makes flood maps more understandable to the public – a positive step forward. However, the new maps do not account for intense rainfall flooding, which caused $2.5 billion in insured losses in Quebec this summer alone. We must be sure to explain that, even if you are not in a floodplain, it does not mean you are not at #floodrisk.... 🎧Listen here (starts at 16m10s): https://lnkd.in/exMbAKF3 Includes great commentary by Nicolas Milot and Dimitrios (Jim) Beis You can also review and comment on the Government of Quebec's new proposed regulatory framework here until Oct 17: https://lnkd.in/eBMzS5Wt #floodresilience

🌍📉 New Insights on Climate Change's Economic Impact 📉🌍 A recent paper by the US National Bureau of Economic Research reveals some striking findings about the macroeconomic damages of climate change: -Macroeconomic damages from climate change are 6x larger than previously assessed -A 1°C increase in global temperature can cause a 12% decline in world GDP -Estimated Social Cost of Carbon: $1,056 per ton of CO2, much higher than previous estimates and much higher than the cost of carbon in carbon markets -A business-as-usual warming scenario could produce a 31% present value welfare loss These findings underscore the urgent need for robust decarbonization policies, especially for major economies like the United States. The data suggests that unilateral climate action is not only necessary but also cost-effective. It's a powerful piece in showing the quantitative benefits of climate action for people, profit, and planet! 🔗 Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/ehWrGgrs #climate #climaterisk #economics #climateresearch #carbonprice #climateimpacts #climatefinance #decarbonization #netzero #finance #risk #climatepolicy
