Inspired by a recent post from Emma Steenson on the worst job I've ever had, I started reflecting on some memorable events in my employment history. It became quite the cathartic experience and I’ve not even worked in the health services or armed forces... Just a snapshot: • being asked if I was a virgin by a large group of staff on my first day in one job. • not being given protective equipment in one factory apart from on inspection days or when the owner was trying to get a new client • cleaning toilets and being required to pick up discarded syringe cases with no protection • The usual vomit and other types of cleaning jobs • Being literally picked up, carried and put in a cardboard compactor • Splitting up fights on Bank Holidays and match days • Clearing up after said fights • Being locked in the freezer • Protecting students from gangs • Being bullied • Regularly trying to stop shoplifters who cleared shelves and ran off while I was alone in one store • Doing cash-ups alone in the store after having been told that 2 former colleagues had been raped/held at knife point in similar situations in the same store • Managers telling me they wished they were 20/30 years younger, and then still trying Then I started working in #HigherEducation… of which much has been written about its toxic working conditions. Based on these and other experiences, I’ve always believed that even if the work itself isn’t great, the work environment doesn’t necessarily have to be so bad. Much of the suffering people experience is completely avoidable. And for the suffering that everyone experiences, a little care, empathy and #compassion goes a long way. That’s what drives my work. With that in mind, I will be presenting my research to date at the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) conference below. This will focus on compassionate and toxic practices within UK Higher education and the role that coaching plays.
⏰ Just two months to go until SRHE's International Research Conference 2024! We're excited to bring together an exceptional variety of presentations from academics, researchers, and professionals in the field of higher education (keep an eye out for the programme!) We are delighted to confirm the conference will feature plenary sessions and panels from a fantastic line-up of speakers: Professor Syed Farid Alatas, National University of Singapore Professor Kathleen Lynch, University College Dublin, Ireland, and IHREC Dr Bernie Grummell, Maynooth University, Ireland Professor Jan McArthur, Lancaster University, UK Professor Alice Sullivan, University College London, UK Dr Leila Kadiwal, University College London, UK Professor David Ruebain, University of Sussex, UK Visit our website to book your place! https://lnkd.in/eaRSjq_f

Join us this weekend for our 5th International Scientific E-conference, where we'll have the opportunity to attend the presentation titled: Integrative Comprehension of Reality: Status and Perspectives Conference speaker: Prof. Ephraim Eliav, Director of IHUD, Kamea Research Professor on Quantum Chemistry from Tel Aviv University, Israel Abstract: The desire to comprehend reality, both external and internal, is innate to human beings. This pursuit has led to advancements in science and technology, offering objective ways to study the world. However, questions arise regarding the reliability of existing methodologies and alternative approaches in providing a true understanding of reality. This paper explores fundamental inquiries such as the nature of reality, the connection between reality and human consciousness, and the integrative structure of reality. It suggests that reality is integrative, governed by integral laws and conducive to human comprehension. The presentation highlights the importance of cooperation and proposes practical steps towards building a united human superorganism through Integral Education, social movements, scientific studies, and the development of integral systems. Ultimately, it advocates for an integrative comprehension of reality to address existential challenges and foster harmonious human flourishing. 🗓️Date & time: Saturday, April 6, 2024 from 14:40 - 15:05 (CET) Watch this presentation via our Youtube life broadcast: https://lnkd.in/eZyDA7x3 🔗If you would like to join us on zoom, please fill out the registration form and we will send you a private link https://lnkd.in/ek4ADMqa For more information about the conference, please visit our website: https://lnkd.in/esVGgjKG #unitedhuman #RealityComprehension #IntegrativePerspectives #HumanSuperorganism #QuantumInquiry

We invite you to the seminar where an expert from Finland, Prof. Erkki Ikonen (Aalto University), will advise you on how to engage more effectively in European Partnership of Metrology 🕒 Lithuania is a new participant in EURAMET - The European Association of National Metrology Institutes’ Metrology Research Programmes. The ongoing European Partnership on Metrology programme is half-way as 2024 is the fourth call year. Simultaneously preparation of the next metrology programme for 2028-2034 has started. One of the key requirements for the next programme could be that there is wider participation of EU member countries than in the ongoing Partnership programme. It would thus be of EURAMET’s interest that Lithuania would actively participate in the remaining Partnership calls and also join in the next programme. The call cycle starts each year with submission of Proposed Research Topics (PRT) in February. About half of the PRTs will be transformed to Selected Research Topics (SRT) whose titles will be communicated to NMIs in April. Proposals against SRTs will then be prepared by the consortia before beginning of October. It would be beneficial for Lithuanian organizations, if their researchers would be co-authors already in the PRTs, but it is also possible to join the consortia after the SRTs are known. Procedures to support participation in PRTs and submitted proposals will be discussed. Date and time: 2023-01-17, 13:30 Location: FTMC room D401, Saulėtekio al. 3 📸 Aalto University

📢 Calling all scientists in photonics! Advise the European Commission on significant policy matters. The European Commission is calling on public European scientific and research organisations to nominate outstanding scientists for potential future membership in the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA). What is the GCSA ❓ The GCSA plays a crucial role in providing the College of European Commissioners with top-quality, timely, and independent scientific advice on a broad spectrum of issues, including significant policy matters highlighted by the European Parliament and the Council. Members of the GCSA are selected for their exceptional scientific expertise and their wide-ranging perspective on how science informs policy. Their collective knowledge covers key scientific developments, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. Appointments are made by the Commissioner for Research and Innovation, following a shortlist prepared by an independent, high-level Identification Committee. Nominate an outstanding scientist by 30 September (6 pm CEST) and contribute to informed policy making. Check the comments to learn more! 📌 #Science #Policy #Research #Innovation

Abstract submission for the Spring MRS meeting in Seattle closes 10/17! I am working with the Center for the Science of Synthesis Across Scales (CSSAS), an Energy Frontier Research Center, to host Symposium SF08-Achieving and Exploiting Complexity Through the Synthesis and Application of Hybrid Hierarchical Materials. Please consider submitting an abstract! Abstract Submission Deadline: October 17, 2024, 11:59 pm ET The abstract submission page: https://lnkd.in/gnjhDVfF With living systems as inspiration, a grand challenge in materials research is achieving the rational design of hierarchical materials for complex functions based on a predictive understanding of materials synthesis across scales. This symposium will bring together experimental and computational researchers from across the science and engineering community to discuss innovative approaches to mastering the free energy landscapes that control the assembly of complex building blocks into ordered and functional hybrid hierarchical systems. Topics will include: Synthesis of hybrid hierarchical materials Application of hybrid hierarchical materials: Energy and the environment Application of hybrid hierarchical materials: Metamaterials Application of hybrid hierarchical materials: Biology and medicine Theory and simulation to predict the form and function of hybrid hierarchical materials Joint Sessions are being considered with SF07-Complexity Engineering of Materials Combining Order, Disorder and Hierarchical Organization.
