📆 This year's Black History Month is themed "Reclaiming Narratives", a moment dedicated to correcting historical inaccuracies, showing our untold success stories & showcasing the full complexity of our Black heritage. ✨ The black community in the UK is blessed to have countless individuals who have contributed significantly to the wellbeing of the black community and continue to inspire people of all races even in their death. One of these key figures is the wonderful Dame Jocelyn Barrow (15 April 1929 - 9 April 2020); an educationist, community campaigner, women's activist, and so much more. 🌎 Following her move from Trinidad to the UK in 1959, Dame Barrow received a diploma in Youth Leadership and Community work, stirring an insatiable hunger and passion for improving the livelihood of black people by addressing the systemic inequalities and outright racism so prevalent across all spheres of society. 📜 Her robust conviction contributed significantly to the development of the Race Relations Act 1976, which clearly outlined direct and indirect discrimination, and made discrimination unlawful in key areas including employment, education and housing. The Act also protected black people from the consequences of reporting experiences of discrimination - a monumental victory for black people and other minority groups. 📰 In addition to this and other outstanding feats, Dame Barrow became the first black woman to be a governor of the BBC, giving black culture a significant presence within the broadcasting and media space and a voice where the community were once silenced. 🙏 We are grateful for her contribution to society, and are continually inspired by her selflessness - leading to change, progress, and a future hope of equality and justice. ~ The future will be brighter. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonth2024 #blackhistorymonthuk #activism #equalrights #blackcreatives #london #culture #culturalheritage #diversity #culturalcredibility #femaleempowerment #british #eaglelondonagency #emhglobal

Global DEI, Engagement and OD leader | Develops and Implements Strategic Initiatives to Strengthen Organizations
Black History Month is a dedicated time to honour the legacy, contributions, and culture of Black Canadians. While Black History Month is marked in February, a true celebration of Black history is more than just a month-long engagement. Racism is alive and well in our workplaces. In a 2021 York University study, 96% of Black Canadians said racism is a concern at work, and 78% stated that the workplace racism they’ve noticed is severe. That’s why we need advocates and allies who can act against anti-Black racism at all times. Effective allyship is rooted in intentionality and solidarity – and it’s about confronting social injustices (like racial inequality) and taking real action against it. I believe that one of the most important parts about being a better ally is ongoing self-education. Course-correcting, listening to Black employees, prioritizing learning and examining our own actions are some of the best ways to ensure we can improve the work experiences for Black Canadians year-round. It's important to recognize that anti-Black racism is deeply embedded in society and workplaces – and that Black Canadians and Black workers must be championed throughout the year. #Blackhistorymonth #inclusion #equity #blackhistorymonthcanada #learnaboutblackhistory #blackhistorymonth2024

While the history of Juneteenth is deep in the United States, it is still new as a federal holiday. As this article points out, "the work of DEI never stops. But the more we recognize holidays like Juneteenth as unifying opportunities, the further we can travel on this necessary journey." Juneteenth provides an opportunity for organizations to examine their diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and expand the conversation around how to create a more inclusive culture that elevates and honors the experiences, perspectives, and contributions of Black Americans. This Wednesday, we wish you a meaningful Juneteenth. https://lnkd.in/dqF8_pg #juneteenth #dei #diversity #equity #inclusion

🌟 Happy Juneteenth! 🌟 Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history that symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston, Texas, marking the end of slavery in the United States. As we celebrate this day, let’s reflect on the significance of freedom and the progress we’ve made, while also recognizing the work that still lies ahead. It’s a time to honor the strength and resilience of the Black community, to educate ourselves about the history and culture, and to actively support the fight against racial injustice. Can we use this day as an opportunity to: • Educate ourselves and others about the history and significance of Juneteenth. • Support Black-owned businesses and initiatives. • Amplify Black voices and stories. • Commit to fostering diversity and inclusion in our workplaces and communities. Together, we can continue to build a more inclusive and equitable society. Let’s celebrate freedom, honor the past, and inspire a better future. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #Emancipation #BlackHistory #Diversity #Inclusion #Equality

As we observe Black History Month, it is crucial to reflect on the profound contributions made by our elders in rebuilding the country, spanning various fields from nursing and transportation to art, music, and culture. However, the legacies of painful racism and scandals like Windrush persist in 2024, underscoring the ongoing struggle against systemic inequalities. Throughout history, the racial disparities faced by Black individuals within the justice system have been well-documented, highlighting the system's role in perpetuating racism and oppression. As Alicia Garza aptly stated, racism is a mechanism for certain groups to uphold power at the expense of others. This month serves as a time to honor achievements, acknowledge struggles, and recognize that the fight for justice and equality extends beyond a single month. It is imperative for all of us to dedicate ourselves to creating a future characterized by equality, peace, and respect for all, ensuring justice and fairness prevail. #BlackHistoryMonth #Equality #Justice #Inclusion

As we celebrate Juneteenth, it's essential to recognize the profound historical significance of this day beyond its commercialization. Juneteenth commemorates the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day is a powerful reminder of the long and arduous journey towards freedom and equality for Black Americans. For companies, Juneteenth should serve as more than just a day off on the calendar or an opportunity for marketing campaigns. It’s a call to action to embed the principles of freedom, equity, and justice into your core values and everyday practices. Here are a few ways to honor Juneteenth meaningfully within your organization: 1. **Educate and Reflect:** Host workshops, seminars, and discussions about Black history (outside of Black History month) and the significance of Juneteenth. Encourage employees to engage with this history to better understand the context of current racial issues. 2. **Promote Equity:** Assess your company policies and culture to ensure they promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes hiring practices, pay equity, and creating a supportive environment where all voices are heard and valued. 3. **Support Black Communities:** Partner with and support Black-owned businesses and organizations. Invest in community programs that uplift and empower Black individuals and communities. 4. **Ongoing Commitment:** Commit to anti-racism and inclusion beyond Juneteenth. Develop long-term strategies for diversity training, policy reforms, and community engagement. Remember, honoring Juneteenth means embracing its principles every day. Let this day inspire continuous efforts toward creating a just and inclusive workplace and society. In short, please do not put up “Happy Juneteenth” social media posts if your company does not include African Americans in your leadership, board of directors, or around the table where decisions are made. It is time for real change. #Juneteenth #Equity #Inclusion #BlackHistory #CorporateResponsibility #Diversity
