The Chartered Institute of Fundraising has been advocating for an important amendment to the Data Use and Access Bill, which will extend the soft opt-in to email marketing to charities. The UK government has accepted an amendment to the Data Use and Access Bill that will extend the soft opt-in to marketing emails to charities - putting charities on a level playing field with the commercial sector, allowing them to communicate more freely with supporters. I sit with charities to discuss their campaign video strategy, and many echo the same sentiments 👇🏽 ✅ No one has patience ✅ We need to keep this short ✅ Anything 2 minutes+ and you're wasting your time If I may, I'll respectfully disagree 🤗 Charities need to recognise the great work they are doing, and be proud to show it in full 🏆 Use your annual fundraiser as an opportunity to educate your community as to why what you are doing is important, and why they should want to support you. Hiding behind 120 seconds of check box video won't instill as much confidence in your donors, if you don't convey confidence in your own story. An audience that sees that you are confident to put out a three, four, sometimes five minute video showcasing your organisation, actually respects that there is a story here worth watching, and obviously more going on than meets the eye. Yes, I know we are a fast paced generation, but we still have brains, hearts and minds that understand that other people are doing great work, and naturally, we are curious to absorb that at a natural pace. Short form content has its time and place. I know. But long form content is alive and well, and charities shouldn't be afraid to break the norms and deliver something compelling. Who's with me?

There's a simple joy in quoting the brilliant analogies of Eoghan Beecher. Another couple of absolute crackers from his recent session "You are not making enough money online" from last week's Fundraising Everywhere Individual Giving Conference: 1) When talking about removing friction from a donate page: "If you spend all your time advertising a shop, but you forget to open the door of the shop, then nobody is going to get into it." 2) When talking about how fundraisers need to stop viewing our donate pages like how WE would like to use them, and instead put ourselves in the shoes of our audience, first time donors, existing donors etc.: "When you go into your house and it's dark, you know where to turn on the light switch. As it's your house and you've been there thousands of times. If a stranger comes into your house, they're going to have to look for the light switch." If you haven't seen Eoghan's session, check it out.

Fundraisers: don't make it harder for people to donate than is necessary. It's coming up to End of Financial Year, which means everyone has their tax appeals out. My feed today has been filled with marketers, fundraisers, and even Chairs and CEOs sharing posts about their organisation's campaign. The one common thing I'm seeing? Reposting organisation appeals without links in the repost. I'm having to scroll through beautiful text or gorgeously shot videos and photos, just to find the link to a donation page. I'm interested in these organisations, but it can take a while to find the CTA. Put the link right in your repost, up the top. I bet you'll get more clicks.
