What Teacher Preparation Programs Can Learn from Minority-Serving Institutions

This 74 million article this morning highlights some excellent models of teacher prep in the field, including our friends at the Nashville Teacher Residency. Teacher preparation that incorporates building relational capital, deep and consistent practice, and transition support is so important. There is such a gap in quality prep programs of ALL types for special educators. AND we need to consider why the current design of the role dissuades hopeful teachers from pursuing this path in the first place. That's why the Diverse Learners Cooperative works to support initial teacher prep and ongoing teacher development and support. We also work with school and system leaders to reexamine and redesign the factors that currently limit teacher success. It's not a "this is the best way" or "the only way" -- it's continuing to go upstream and strengthen the elements that make way for capable, confident, connected teachers! New Jersey has sought to waive basic skills requirements and ease unnecessary barriers for educators to attract more teachers at a time when fewer young people are completing teacher education training programs. It is believed that the shortage will only get worse and districts will need to tap into a pipeline that increasingly includes more teachers who find their way through alternate teaching programs, which allow those who have not completed a teacher preparation program to obtain a certificate of eligibility. They still must meet the basic requirements for certification such as academic study and test requirements. For the 2022-23 school year, there were 3,644 teachers in New Jersey who completed an alternate route program, more than double the amount for the 2019-20 school year, according to the latest statistics available from NJDOE. In addition, 4,309 provisional certificates were issued for that time period. https://lnkd.in/eveu8e9U
