Takiwātanga, the Māori word for autism, translates to “his/her own time and space.” This term, coined by Keri Opai, reflects a profound understanding and respect for neurodiversity. It is part of the Te Reo Hāpai glossary, which enriches the language used in mental health, addiction, and disability sectors. This glossary was created because as we are all very much aware, a lot of clinical terms used like ASD or autism spectrum disorder focuses more on the negative side i.e disorder, which means no order. This is limiting the person’s belief and abilities that they can contribute to society while enjoying life. Often we want these people with autism to live a normal life in a society but what is normal? How do you define “normal”? Does it mean that if it is something that doesn’t conform with our own standards, it is not normal? And talking about standards, whose standards are we talking about here? Let’s continue to celebrate and support neurodiversity in all its forms. 🌍💙 #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #AutismAwareness #Takiwatanga https://lnkd.in/gPTQenwR

🧩 Welcome to Episode 42: Embodied Practice in our Special Educational Needs World 🧩 It's great to be back for a new season, just as autumn begins to arrive. 🍂 Isn't it incredibly difficult to step away from screens and make time for play, reflection, rest, and meaningful social connection? I certainly find it a challenge. On a recent walk, I spotted swallows preparing to leave for southern Africa and noticed people fishing for Atlantic mackerel, which are also migrating north. It reminded me that life is always on the move. 🎙️ In this episode, I dive into the rising prevalence of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in schools, alongside the social, emotional and mental health challenges young people face today. I also reflect on embodied practice, which to me means paying attention to sensations and feelings in our bodies – something that's not always easy, but essential for building healthier relationships. Additionally, I'm exploring blind spots—both mine and yours—so we can start addressing privilege and power and offer more dignity and respect to others. 🎧 Tune in to the full episode to reflect, learn and engage with these important topics. https://lnkd.in/eia-nA3e #SEND #MentalHealth #Education #AutumnReflections #EmbodiedPractice #SocialEmotionalLearning #Inclusion #SpecialEducationalNeeds #Wellbeing #PersonalGrowth #SocialConnection #PrivilegeAndPower #Reflection

MEETUP DMV NEW GROUP OPPORTUNITY: There are a score of local parenting groups--including at least one for gay parents--but no support groups for parents of gay and transgender kids, who are often bullied at school. These kids--and their parents?--need mental health support, but there is no Meetup-related one-stop shop for such resources or family-oriented counseling. Local mental health professionals and facilitators: are you missing a beat? ###
