Aircraft connectivity provider SmartSky Networks, found in 2011, has announced that they have ceased business operations effective August 16, 2024 citing failure to secure the required funds. The abrupt closure of SmartSky has left a cloud of uncertainty hanging over its customers, particularly regarding the fate of their now-obsolete hardware. “SmartSky was founded with a bold vision: to revolutionize aviation communications. We successfully built and operated a leading, high-performance nationwide air-to-ground network using unlicensed spectrum, made possible by innovative patented technology,” the company’s website read. “Along the way, our team dedicated great energy and expertise, earning several prestigious industry awards. On 29th of May at Ineco premises in Madrid, we had an understanding deep dive meeting dedicated to EUREKA SESAR3 Fast Track project Solution 2: Vertiport Collaborative Traffic Management. This meeting has been fundamental to clarify the validation plan and the exercises that are going to be performed in this solution. 🔍 Together with the Solution 2 Aena leadership team – César Nava Gaxiola & Alberto Mangas Pita and VALP lead Team from Ineco (Victor Gordo, Javier de Andres Villarroya,  Inès Becerra ) and the rest of the partners of Solution 2: Enaire (Marc Olmo, Raquel Moldes Teijeiro, Virginia Rodriguez), Indra (Barbara Franco, Cristian Martín Calvo, Diana Jimeno), PVS (BOYAN ILIEV), Unifly (Kseniia N. and Youri De Bondt) and CRIDA (Jose Maria Cervero)  we have discussed a complete validation plan that include: - Analytical modelling facilitated by Ineco - Lab prototyping enabled by Indra - Expert group & judgement analysis witness by Aena - Real time solutions (RTS) commanded by Enaire - Live trials facilitated by Enaire and Aena 🤝 Our collaborative efforts focus on developing vertiport collaborative traffic management #vctm which is a cooperative process in which all the required Innovative Air Mobility actors work together to make the best use of available resources, reducing the uncertainties in the operations. 🌐 Partners involved in Solution 2: EUROCONTROL, Aena, ENAIRE, Indra, Unifly, Pipistrel Vertical Solutions , CRIDA A.I.E. and INECO. Big step today at STR for hydrogen in aviation. 🛫 The German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr) today announced their support for the BALIS 2.0 project. The development and testing of high-performance fuel cell systems for regional aircraft will be funded with 9.3 million EUR. Our partner H2FLY is involved, together with Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V. and Diehl Aviation. ✈ Dr. Volker Wissing (Minister for Digital and Transport) says: "I am very proud that Germany is playing a pioneering role in the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems for commercial aviation.
