How do we de-silo our digital commerce business? This was one of the key questions posed during the first keynote at Digital Food & Beverage today in London. It is also one of the most common challenges faced by digital commerce manufacturers today. Understanding why the silos exist, and where in your organisation, is a first step to breaking the silos down. Understanding what your customers expect, how they want you to be present where they are shopping, what they are expecting to buy in order to satisfy their needs, missions and journeys, will bring clarity of what you are trying to achieve and will create a vision that different functions across your organisation can buy into and stretch to deliver. Understanding the processes and practises that are impacted by the silos would be a next step. Breaking those processes into all the key steps, stage gates, sign offs and deadlines will create visibility of where the blockers, ways of working issues and areas of mismanagement are. Trying to deliver a new vision using the same old processes and ways of working is like trying to to go to the moon on a horse. Horses moved people round the known world for millennia, but are not relevant in travelling to a new world. Redesigning your processes to deliver your new vision is essential. Assigning owners to each process step, firstly at a functional level and then at a role level will create clarity of who is responsible for delivering each step, which roles should influence decision making (and which should not) and release log jams that hold up progress. Having the right meeting structures, meeting purposes and meeting objectives will remove wasted work, wasted time and encourage cross-functional working, conversations, ownership and delivery. Finally, continuous learning, development and upskilling across all levels and functions in your organisation will encourage sharing, celebrating learning (not just successes) and enable collaborative problem solving. From my experience organisations silos for digital commerce are born from a lack of ownership and understanding. If you can create clear a structure, centred around the customer and continuous learning culture, with clear ownership of key processes and practises and a high expectation of delivery, then you can break down silos and encourage collaboration and collective problem solving. #digitalcommerce #ecommerce #cpg #cpgindustry #fmcg #fmcgindustry #retail #digitaltransformation #waysofworking

#ecommerce Having just completed my juding in the eComm Live™ & eComm Awards | eCommerce Events Awards last week a few things were different this year. > #B2B has a very clear narrative in the success stories - reduction of admin, workload and process gains. Unlocking new markets and improving revenue/cash flow in existing markets. > #B2B It was hard to separate the enterprise and small business applications. Considering the challenges across the spectrum, there were fantastic entries, size, it seems does not matter. #B2B Noticeable in the enterprise space the planning phase seems long was delivered quickly - from what I can see/say planning periods were 6 - 12 months before execution began. Results are measured over a longer period which is something B2C could learn from - cashflow mgmt aside. > #B2C maturity is really starting to shine through. The stand out entries articulated their strategy really clearly and the steps to get there were easy to see and measure throughout those applications. > #B2C Emerging, new ecomm businesses are utilising channels for marketing well. What becomes obvious quickly is their knowledge of: their customer their brand their position to that customer #Culture In all of the top scoring applications, there was cultural support for the projects. This was not expicitly said, but comes through in the execution phases. Many of the teams are small and need fairly seamless implementation. There is a size of business where in house delivery exceeds makes more sense than agencies. But agencies, and their experience are vital in a place like Ireland. It is not just expertise, in fact that goes so far but it is the relationships that people have built up over time that count. Picking up the phone to ask a question is powerful. Your agency are a powerful conduit to the wider world you might need and that is valuable. Tomorrow, I will be sharing my participation in the judging of the UK awards and It will be interesting to observe the differences. Awards have a very welcome place in our world, they are important. Mostly to solidify and celebrate these relationships. Without them, we have a very lonely world. As I think about various impacts we are facing now, it is a great comfort to have events like this to get us together and for the friends we make on the way.
