Historically and presently, Black Americans endure disproportionately worse health outcomes and discrimination in healthcare. First, I will present data (including a nationally representative sample) that assesses the influence of the quality of healthcare experiences on medical trust and early COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy in Black Americans. Next, this presentation deeply examines the specific context and experiences in physician-Black patient interactions that may erode medical trust. This is done in a qualitative study conducted with Black American women with breast cancer, a group with repeated exposure to the medical community. Also, I will discuss research that tests how learning about the stories of Black American experiences in healthcare can increase White American perspective-taking. Implications for how medical institutions can build trust with the Black community by acknowledging and addressing injustice in the healthcare system will be discussed. Dr. Kimberly J. Martin is a University of California President's Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC San Francisco. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from UCLA and her B.A. in Psychology, with honors and high distinction, from UC Berkeley. Her research centers on the impact of inequity and the importance of history to current experiences, perceptions & mental/physical health outcomes of minoritized people. Specifically, much of her research looks at the experiences of Black Americans in the healthcare system. It tests how to improve outcomes for Black Americans by increasing the acknowledgment of and support for addressing racism. CAPS/DPS/PRC Town Hall. It’s a tailored treatment model that empowers underserved African American and Black Adolescents, fostering holistic well-being and sustainable growth. 🙌🏽 As I close this chapter of my academic journey, I reflect on the culmination of rigorous study and passionate advocacy that have shaped this path. Each book, each page turned, has not just imparted knowledge but has also amplified the stories and struggles that have fueled my mission, vision, and values. Despite lots of $ and many grant funded programs to reduce the disparities between Black Americans and White Americans, gaps in health outcomes between them has remained essentially the same for 20 years. Why? Could it be a lack of Blacks as Professors of Public Health to design and lead interventions? I will end the suspense for you. The answer is Yes! This is a major part of the problem. Did you know that only 4‰ of Public Health professors are Black (2% each for men and women. Why so low when our undergraduate programs sometimes have 30% of students who are Black or Brown? Yet in this environment, we are not supposed to talk about diversity equity, and inclusion? We are not supposed to talk about race? Seriously? Talk about burying your head in the sand. We have a massive problem in public health and it will not get solved by pretending that everything is OK. #InstitutionalRacism #HealthDisparities #HealthEquity

“Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” – Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Often hailed as the father of Black History, Dr. Woodson’s words are eerily poignant today, considering the increasingly vocal public discourse propagating falsehoods about the truism of American history. Falsehoods that deliberately seek to erase this history from the sensibilities of our youth and future generations of Americans. The context of Woodson’s words and work resurface and resonate frequently in our health equity conversations. An acknowledgment of America’s historical and current biases and prejudices that perpetuate adverse political and social determinants of health is a critical enabler of achieving health equity. During this #BlackHistoryMonth, I encourage you to continue to educate yourself on the legacies and work of leaders like Dr. Woodson, to remind and inspire us to focus on the long game in this quest for health equity in American society today. https://lnkd.in/eEMyQAnQ

USC Center for the Political Future (CPF) presents Quick Takes: Q&A with Val Demings, former U.S. Representative (D-FL). In an informal conversation with CPF, she shared that she cares about politics because, "Politics touches every aspect of our lives. The goal of politics is to improve the quality of life for all people." Val's first political experience was working as a police chief in Orlando, Florida where she got involved in local politics by attending every city council meeting. Her advice for having respectful political discourse is to always focus on the issues. "We may never agree on everything, but whenever you're speaking to someone with an opposite opinion, always start with the common ground. Begin with those issues that you agree on, then build out an agenda that works for the people from there." As a CPF special guest, she appreciates CPF's work to build a future that works for everybody. "CPF's work to build an agenda that works for the American people, that works to help and protect them, is so important." Today, we remember Dr. King as a champion for health equity. He knew healthcare disparities are "shocking & inhumane." We honor him by dismantling barriers & building a just system. Here are some actionable steps we can take: - Advocate for policies that address the root causes of health disparities, such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of access to quality education and employment. - Support initiatives that increase cultural competency and implicit bias training for healthcare providers. - Invest in community-based healthcare programs that reach underserved populations. - Amplify the voices of marginalized communities and actively listen to their needs. - Engage in data-driven research to identify and address specific health disparities. Dr. King's dream wasn't just about equal rights, but a healthy life for all. Let's make it a reality.
