This week, I successfully defended my dissertation proposal, and I can share that I am officially a PhD candidate! I thank my advisor and the rest of my committee for their support, grace, and guidance! I look forward to defending my dissertation sometime later this year! My research is focused on refining the use of the trace element rhenium (Re) as a tracer of a process that has an unquantified contribution to atmospheric CO2 over Earth's history. I also am trying to understand the role of weathering of different rocks in delivering and preserving sediment in the Pacific Northwest.

The outbreak of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), which spreads across the surface of a colony coral until no living tissue remains, is disrupting the delicate balance of coral reefs in the Caribbean. In a new study published today in Science Magazine, scientists show that the disease is destroying susceptible species of coral while helping other weedy organisms, like algae, thrive – at least for now. While some organisms might flourish in the short term, the impacts of SCTLD are complex and loss of corals could have long-lasting consequences. On this day in science the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Paul Crutzen, Maria Molina and F. Sherwood Rowland on this day in 1995 They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on the formation and decomposition of ozone (O3). 🏔️🌍 A new study unveils a century of climate insights from a Mount Elbrus ice core! International Researchers, including co-author, Byrd Center's Stanislav Kutuzov at the School of Earth Sciences, have released findings from an ice core on Mount Elbrus, revealing significant shifts in organic carbon aerosols over southeastern Europe. Their study, published in JGR Atmospheres, traced the history of these aerosols by examining dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and its radiocarbon signature. https://bit.ly/4bvRYqN

SCIENCE, DOGMA AND DENIALISM. Scientific productions are, by definition, fallible, non-definitive and perfectible. Dogma as it is characterized by immutability, specifically of indisputable final truths. Denialism is a psychological resource of individual or collective historical agents (past or present) whose objective is to evade empirical or theoretical evidence for non-scientific purposes. A strange systemic turn by broad sectors of public opinion and ruling elites has managed to combine dogma with science (a variety of pseudoscience) to establish the ultimate truth of Planetary Warming (non-global). Such propaganda opposes the scientific evidence of said process and its causes (forgetting, due to ignorance or inexperience, the Milankovitch cycles). In conclusion, the best contribution to humanity comes from scientific discussion and the only thing worse than pure denialism and dogma lies in the relative, variable, sinuous and self-interested combination of such vectors with Contemporary Modern Science.

On this day in science Mario Molina and Sherwood Rowland paper proposing that chlorofluorocarbons deplete ozone was published in1974. Molina was the first to realize that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) could destroy ozone. In the two decades following his discovery, he and his mentor became voices alerting the world to the danger of CFCs and ozone depletion. Their warnings often fell on deaf ears.
