Since standards of care and scientific outcomes are rarely available, I offer the following advice in choosing a treatment center for a loved one: 1.    You need an independent evaluation, not a recommendation from a business development person who is getting paid to bring folks to the program. 2.    If they mention 12 step immersion for ALL-stay away 3.    Ask if they provide Medication Assisted Therapy and Harm Reduction if they do not -stay away. 4.    If you know the length of stay in advance - stay away 5.    Ask if you are isolated from your family and they take away your email and phone if they say yes - stay away. 6.    Ask if support in the community includes help in finding jobs, housing,          transportation , childcare, medical services, if not -stay away 7.    When possible avoid programs that are in resort areas or are away from your community by more than several hours 8. Your treatment plan should include what you want, within clinical and ethical standards   and agreed upon by yourself -if not -stay away 9. Ask if your family is involved in the program from day one, if not stay away 10. Ask for outcome data for your peer group and diagnosis.
