Meet Sahand Adibnia, an ARPA-E NTEREST intern who is diving into the future of hydrogen at Columbia University. This summer, Sahand is supporting Columbia's OPEN 2021 project, which is advancing a low-temperature water electrolyzer for hydrogen production using ultrathin proton-conducting oxide membranes.  Through his work characterizing proton transport mechanisms and optimizing conductivity with advanced electrochemical techniques, he has discovered the critical role of precise error analysis in pushing the boundaries of experimental research. Meet Joey Jacobs, one of ARPA-E's INTEREST interns. This summer, Joey is supporting the MINER project at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), focused on injecting supercritical CO2 into geologic formations to sequester carbon and mobilize critical minerals like nickel and cobalt—essential for clean energy technologies. Joey has been preparing and analyzing rock samples using advanced equipment, such as X-ray diffraction machines, to evaluate the carbon sequestration process. His research at PNNL has exposed him to a variety of new and exciting disciplines and has even given him the opportunity to submit a first-author peer-reviewed journal article to publish his findings.
