Let's talk about one of the most controversial topics in hiring... 🔥 Back Channel Reference Checking 🤔 There are many reasons why leaders may decide to reach out to former colleagues, leaders and other network connections to "check out" or confirm the viability of a prospective new hire. On the surface, it sounds like a great way to better inform a hiring decision. The reality is that back channeling can create a false sense of confidence. Here's why: It's crucial to consider that the references may share experiences or even hearsay about the candidate in a distinct sales environment, involving sales and technical enablement, solution architecture, product ROI/COI, company culture, demands, GTM strategy, analytics, and more – all of which could differ significantly from the prospective hiring company. For this reason alone, Relying heavily on reference details obtained through backchanneling may pose a substantial risk. Moreover, it's important to note that in certain jurisdictions, reaching out to individuals for professional reference checks without their consent could violate privacy laws or regulations. I know firsthand how rough the job market is right now in tech, especially for designers and creatives, and I wanted to offer some advice and thoughts if anyone is feeling hopeless - 1. Never have too much pride to be in a position of vulnerability and reach out to people in your network. All it takes is a message. I have my current contract work from a friend from grad school. (Thank you Rushil Khurana!) While it's not a full-time position, it helps tremendously as we navigate these rapidly changing times. Your network will ALWAYS be more powerful than random job applications. 2. It seems that ATS is being used more than ever, and I've noticed a significant reduction in even screening calls compared to 3 years ago - This implies your resume is probably the weakest link and people may not even be seeing it. Consider talking to someone like Sami Gardner - Career Coach who can go through it with you and offer advice. She has been incredibly helpful to me. There are also a ton of tools nowadays for analyzing your resume quality like: ResumeWorded.com Jobalytics.co Jobscan.co I've also found that switching to a one column format is much safer to get through ATS and not have content get lost, even though it's more vanilla looking. 3. ALWAYS be honing your craft. Give yourself projects. Do things for friends or family. Do something entrepreneurial. Do a passion project. Who knows where it will lead? For example right now I'm designing and developing a game and it's been incredibly rewarding not to mention I've been mastering: - C# and the Unity game engine - Many principles of software engineering specific to games - UI design for video games - Art direction and animation for video games - Integrating AI in to early-stage concept workflows - Etc. As for the industry and job market - Let's face it - We are in an age of efficiency, and that efficiency will only increase. Unfortunately the nature of the free market will ensure that businesses continue to produce as much as they can with as few resources as possible. My hope is that true, inspired, human creativity is valued over cheap, commoditized, raw creativity spat out by generative AI. It has it's value but I hope more business leaders will soon realize the limitations of this technology and get back to hiring good ol' human creative professionals.

A little something for the weekend? Why not clean up your feeds? After a couple of great exposé posts (holding a mirror up to a mirror) I'm proposing that you folks try this 'hack': (1) Go to your LinkedIn search box and enter "an employee asked me if he can work from home permanently" (2) Click "See all results" (3) Navigate to each 'hit' and block any user that posted the same, lame, spammy post without pointing out what was actually happening. (4) ...and relax BONUS IDEA: Instead of simply blocking each user, why not open up the 'likes' list on each one first and block those users too, or maybe even report all of them as 'bots' / fake accounts?

To fellow Developers, The scam job interviews overfloweth! Be aware when receiving emails from a job listing. I have had two separate job applications result in an interview offer; both companies reputable and a dream to work for. It was only after 2/3 emails that my spidy senses ‘tingled’ enough to discover it was a scam! After some research, I found that the following scam trend is running prevalent in the job market today. !! Scammers are using real job positings, scraping data from them, and contacting applicants to offer an ‘interview’ guised as the company !! - These emails often come from an email address that is the company name followed by careers .com I.e. @[accreditivemediagroup]careers .com - Use https://who.is to check who owns the registered domain. If it is from an email like the example above, odds are, it was created within the last week. - Always double check the company website for the job positing if applying through a third party application. - Look for disclaimers on the company website’s careers sections! One of the two companies were aware of the scam, and had posted a disclaimer which included the verified email one would see should they be contacted by the hiring team. The market is tough and these kind of games do not make it any more encouraging. Save yourself the upset, and research the email if your spidey senses begin to ‘tingle’.
