I share a lot about power because I live and breathe it daily, searching for top engineers and leaders and getting them curious about unique opportunities where their skills can impact the development of advanced power technologies. Our conversations usually center around power ICs, but there’s a power SYSTEM company that plays such an integral part in our industry, without them it would be almost impossible for engineers and architects to see their designs come to life. That company is Advanced Energy. Headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado, AE is best known in our industry for its leadership in RF power delivery systems for plasma generation which they have developed for over 20 years. Their technology is vital for generating and controlling plasma in processes like plasma-enhanced etch and deposition, which have enabled the semiconductor industry to advance in leaps and bounds. Toolmakers and customers of AE like Applied Materials and Lam Research have to design next-generation systems with increasingly sophisticated plasma control and management because with every process node jump, there are tighter requirements in terms of the precision needed from equipment that makes advanced chips for AI, data centers, etc. SVP of Plasma Power Products Jürgen Braun has likened the company’s role in semiconductor development to being a technology enabler, stating at SEMICON West that AE is doing its part to drive the ‘Angstrom Era’. Their technology and marketplace leadership really bode well for the company, and it affords them many opportunities to expand their business horizontally and vertically. However, they have to keep their eye on one major threat to the business: their talent. Employees with skills in RF power for plasma generation are becoming rare because the number of engineers graduating with advanced degrees and skills in RF power has slipped significantly in recent years. Across the industry, the situation has become so competitive that some companies have begun reaching into the telecom market to find employees. (By no means a bad approach!). AE recognizes how critical this talent is to their business. They even highlighted it in their annual report, noting that retiring employees with endemic knowledge could be the result of major slowdowns or gaps in product development. As someone who has had to recruit RF plasma power talent before, it’s a major challenge and not one that any TA team member would want to do again and again. So for AE, talent retention, employee skill development, and talent pipelining will be keys to their future success. Advanced degrees in RF usually take four years of rigorous study, but if AE can successfully identify and attract that next generation with the promise of a great career in equipment development and the appeal of the Rocky Mountain lifestyle, they’ll keep themselves in position as the premier RF plasma power company. #semiconductorindustry #semiconductors #powermanagement

However, when I arrived, I found a very young and dynamic team in every department. I caught that spirit, so from the first moment on, I was very motivated to fulfill my tasks in the best possible way. What excites you most about your role as a Process Engineer at SOLAR MEMS? 🌐 Process Engineer allows you to learn a lot as tasks change depending on the project. For this reason, you obtain lots of experience and avoid being trapped in a monotonous and repetitive job. Can you tell us a little bit about the projects you are currently working on? How do you see yourself contributing to these projects? ✨ Currently, I am working on the project of developing a SDR (Software Defined Radio), specifically in the hardware design. It is a very challenging project, as RF devices introduce a higher level of difficulty. However, I think that I am being able to contribute properly to this project, as I learned lots of electronyc during my master, which is essential to this project.
