I am presenting at the https://lnkd.in/gUd3WF3g conference, and am on a panel on mobility solutions for the 21st century. The following is a description of my planned presentation: "The title of my piece will be ‘Houston, we have a problem’, and will look at the fact that while we have all sorts of solutions for the 21st Century, we do not actually have any that are working together at scale to deliver the sort of emissions reduction that we need from transportation. I will talk about the things we know for sure that ain’t true, and how we need something more comprehensive than the current scattergun approach to reducing fossil-fuelled VMT (VKT) in the face of incredibly low marginal cost of operation of the private car. I will call for a very well coordinated and well funded research approach that lifts us from the single solution/single trial/discard on failure/pretend it didn’t happen methodology to the sort of experimentation that allowed a thousand failures but led to the successful development of the electric lightbulb. I will ask for establishment of a task force to bring this program into being with international leadership and urgency."
