Another year, another presentation to a progressive group of Canadian dealers. Last year I was invited by Paul McGeachie to present at the Motorcycle Powersport BC's first annual dealer summit. Great group of dealers, we had a good time, and I'm not sure why but they invited me back. Canada is very different than the U.S. on the powersports front. For the most part dealers have no franchise protections, margins on vehicles are typically lower, auto groups own quite a few roof tops, and many areas are packed with dealers selling the exact same brands. It's often a fight to see who can give away a machine for the lowest price, and that's caused many dealers to learn how to maximize profits in other areas of the business. While many U.S. dealer associations are focused mostly on state and vendor issues, the MPBC has a wide mandate on subjects like rider safety, career development, area access, and sustainability. This year's summit is on October 6th and 7th, in Harrison Hot Springs, BC. If you aren't signed up, then take a few minutes to do so. And, as I found out last year, some of these organizations are way more concerned with selling vendor sponsorships than they are about advocating for their dealer members. I'm always going to be a primary advocate for the dealer, and I won't stand for anyone disseminating misleading information. If you are a member of a state dealer association, be sure to confirm that they have your best interests at heart.
