What percentage of people who are in a plane crash survive? The answer: over 95% That was the result of a study by US National Transportation Safety Board. I’ve been flying a lot recently, and was getting annoyed by all the “remember to put on your seatbelts and put away your tray tables” nonsense. If this plane goes down, will any of that make a difference? Is this all just theatre? Turns out, I was wrong. Over 95% of people survive! I think there are some caveats there, but this is pretty incredible! Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean the safety demos are useful. I have no idea how much that 95% comes from telling people their cushion can be used as a flotation device. Still, I totally missed what was going on. I think this has an important marketing message: your understanding of industries that you aren’t in is much worse than you believe. It is critical to have some humility and take the time to learn.
