In my work I have seen too many children and young people in our scools in the UK excluded as early as reception class… I belive behaviour is a form of communication. There needs to be creativity in our thinking as our children grow up to be adults. Let’s change the narrative. When it comes to supporting SEND in schools and our wider societies, we are still operating in a exclusion and integration model. Laws may have changed, but perception, cultural perspectives and fixed attitudes are much harder to shift. 𝗔 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗔 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗗𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 On this Independence Day, we as a global community, it is our moral obligation to take urgent, united action to eradicate this atrocity from our societies. Sexual violence against young girls is a horrifying reality that transcends borders, cultures, and systems. Every case is not just an assault on an individual but an attack on the very fabric of our humanity. 𝗟𝗔𝗪 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁 The law must serve as the protector of the vulnerable. Stronger enforcement, swifter justice, and stricter penalties for offenders must be a non-negotiable commitment from our governments. Laws are the first barrier against predators and should instill fear in anyone contemplating such heinous acts. But laws alone cannot solve this crisis. 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁 Education is the cornerstone of change. Our schools and institutions must go beyond academics and instill values of respect, consent, and empathy in children from a young age. Empowering our girls with knowledge of their rights, and educating boys about mutual respect and boundaries, is essential. Schools should become safe spaces that foster these critical conversations and reshape mindsets. 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁 However, laws and education will fall short without cultural reform at the family level. Families play a central role in shaping a child's worldview. #Parents must instill in their children the #values of #equality, #respect, and #dignity. We must break the toxic cycles of patriarchal dominance and misogyny that fuel such violence. Raising children with empathy and respect for all human beings is a responsibility that every family must carry. 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁 This is not just a legal, educational, or cultural issue—it's a human issue. We need to unite across all dimensions to create a world where young girls are safe to walk freely, to live without fear, and to dream without the threat of violence. Let this be our collective #VOW to do whatever it takes to protect our daughters. I don't like discussing or writing about trivial topics or minor complaints, especially on social media. Today, I had a conversation with the staff at #StBenildusCollege about my son's admission process for secondary school, which will be in a few years. During the phone call, I was reviewing the admission criteria and was asked if my son is #RomanCatholic. I said no and was then informed that he would not be eligible for preference under Category 1, which is designated for "Roman Catholics". This shocked me. I've been living outside my home country for over 10 years (and in Ireland for 5 years approx.) I pay taxes. I've never encountered discrimination. I told the person on the phone that I thought Ireland had moved beyond such policies and they replied that they were not responsible for setting the policies. I'm not writing this post to rant, but to #RaiseAwareness and #AdvocateForChange. I usually don't ask for support, but this is a key social issue where I need your help to raise the voice! Discrimination of any kind should not be there! and by raising the voice together, we can really make a difference! It is easy to say that we do not discriminate based on race, color, creed or gender. But then there are times when we really need to make sure that it is so, in this case, probably by raising our voice and speaking up! I don't mind enrolling my child in a private school if needed, but that doesn't solve the underlying problem. It's ironic that men who boast about their education and claim 95% of women are illiterate can still commit heinous crimes like domestic violence. Does education only teach us to earn a living, or does it also teach us the value of a human life? Today marks a new beginning for these families. For the last year, they have endured a difficult period as their children faced countless violent racial motived attacks at their schools, targeted based on their status as immigrants. Today, one more of their assailants pled guilty in Norfolk District Court. In a bizarre twist, one of the attackers had taken out cross warrants against the victims, converting them from victims to defendants, doubtless in a vain attempt to pressure the victims to drop their pursuit of accountability. This situation highlights the absurdity of a system where false allegations can distort justice, and where individuals charged with sorting truth from fiction outside of court permit retaliatory charges to go forward. These cross-warrant procedures are allowed to proceed, even though prosecutors knew the allegations were bogus and misleading. As an immigrant myself, I worry about the message this process sends to oppressed communities about voicing and presenting crimes of abuse and violence against minorities. The courts and prosecutors should encourage victim reporting and resorting to the police and courts for help, rather than engaging in violent self help. Cross-warrants, ironically, have the opposite effect. They show our legal system can easily be manipulated to the detriment of the vulnerable. This case underscores the urgent need for legal reforms to protect immigrant communities from such legal manipulations and ensure that the voices of the oppressed are heard and respected. Allowing aggressors to play victim without procedural oversight sets a dangerous precedent for the treatment of the vulnerable within our legal system. We must stand together to advocate for a fair and just legal process that truly serves all members of our community, especially those who are most vulnerable. The integrity of our justice system depends on it.
