Most of us tend to talk about "Coaching & Mentoring" as though the two words have the same meaning. Luckily, Claude J. Werder has an elegant way of illuminating all of the nuances we often skip over when talking about what it means to "coach" and what it means to "mentor." And what it means to *be* coached or mentored. A few takeaways: ✨ Claude noted, "Coaching is the most personal type of learning you can have." ✨ Words matter. There is a huge difference between coaching for development as a person and/or professional, and "coaching" for punitive or corrective action. We often use the term "coaching" in a negative light. ✨ Mentorship has a different objective than coaching. Coaching objectives are often set by the coach and/or organization. Objectives for mentoring are typically set by the mentee. A crucial difference. ✨ We always assume the best coaches come from within. But that's not scalable for many organizations, and it lacks the third-party objectivity that an external resource may provide. ✨ For coaching or mentoring to be valuable, it requires active participation from *both* parties. If the mentee is disengaged, or if there is a misalignment in desired outcomes, your mentoring efforts may be ineffective. 🔮 Also loved Claude's prediction. But no spoilers here, have a listen! P.S.
