Am I a data engineer or a fire fighter 🧘🏿 Day in the life of a Data Engineer includes 1. No matter how much work you close before the weekend, new day new problems 🎁 2. Develop queries ⌨️ 3. Share sample data for data sanity with source and business teams 💾 4. Day to day project related issues and solutions 🪛 5. Ensure all data pipelines are in place and data reaches designated teams to avoid escalation 🆘 6. Take some help from colleagues, senior management or business teams to not get stuck over a problem 🚒 7. Finding data issues in terms of governance. finding data that is missing from our clean layer that needs to be updated. detecting areas for improvement/recommendations in terms of data models. cooperating with data science on our install intelligence team to help research any issues they find. 2. Developing an anomaly detection model for our data sets. basically, high level idea would be to help us develop a set of analytics that we can alert off of to proactively detect issues. items like 7 day avg, std-deviation, IQR to better understand our datasets and how they generally behave. once that is complete, develop a more sophisticated model for running detections at 30 minute intervals (or as quickly as we can which makes sense from a cost perspective). This post made me smile this morning! Most business leaders understand sales and marketing, since they usually have that background. With everything becoming “data-driven” a resource grab for data talent is ongoing. However, most business leaders have no idea how nuanced the data field actually is and “data scientist” is the sexiest title most people think of. (Well maybe not this week, AI engineer is taking the stage….which is still data dependent, btw). Hence, the painfully truthful post below. If you have data that is not where it needs to be or the shape it needs to be in, you need to start with data engineers. When the data starts to flow and has meaning, then a data scientist can work their magic. The other day I saw this post from Zach Wilson asking when is this "Senior-Only Job Market" is going to end. I replied with my thoughts in his post but wanted to share with you as well. What is the "Senior-Only Job Market"? Its the fact that when companies recruit for some "entry-level" jobs now, they are asking for unattainable curriculas from applicants with no experience looking to enter the market. And like I replied on Zach´s post, the worst part is that I believe the seniors-only market has just started. AI has been disrupting jobs for some time now, and as we have seen, it has the potential to cover for several junior functions such as: - drafting summaries, - writing articles, emails - basic coding, basic data wrangling - and pretty much every task that doesn't require much specialization. Then, to contextualize and make the outputs work & useful companies will need mostly specialized/experienced talent. This means that I believe the most impacted jobs in the medium and long term by Artificial Intelligence disruptions will be the junior ones, setting up an entry barrier for new talents to enter the "formal" job market. Question for all the more senior Data Engineers in my network What’s next? I recruit for tons of Data Engineer roles and I’ve seen the candidates I’ve worked with over the years go on to have incredible careers. But the career paths can be so varied. Some have gone on to be people managers as Head of Data Engineering. I've seen a Data Analyst go on to become a Lead Data Architect! Others have opted to become contractors and get paid massive sums. Some have moved into strategic and architectural roles. But for a lot of more junior Data Engineers, they may not know exactly what to do next. So, for senior data engineers and leaders in my network, what advice would you give to your younger self when deciding which path was right for you?
