In this week's Good Marketing Brief, Nhu talks through Wendy's marketing "oopsie" and ways to engage using events. Last week, Wendy’s announced that it planned on rolling out “dynamic pricing” with digital menu boards, hinting that prices would change based on demand. After receiving some serious public pushback, Wendy’s backtracked and clarified that prices would not be increasing — just discounted during slower business hours. What lessons can nonprofits draw from this PR nightmare? Be clear with your messaging, and don’t hamper the trust of your audience. Trust is a motivating factor in their decision to back your cause, often influencing whether they stay or move on elsewhere. Noticing more lapsed supporters? Continue leaning into community and experience. To dig into that a little bit more, this week’s brief spotlights how events can engage new supporters and recapture older ones. ✋🏼 ✋🏽 ✋🏾 Raise your hand if you’re already planning for year-end activities. And I don’t mean pumpkin spicing, caroling, or ball-dropping, if you do any of those. August is the best time for year-end professional planning. 🤯 There, I said it. I had to. For all our benefit. Even though you may still be #vacamode, NOW is the best time to plan your end-of-year activities, whether it’s strategic planning, fundraising, membership drives, holiday thank-you campaigns, etc. Here are just a few projects that I’m currently prepping with Oct-Dec launch dates: • Producing creative for an October new member recruiting campaign • High-level planning for EOY fundraising support (not sure if it will be a campaign or not yet!) • Creating a save-the-date for a holiday PSA campaign • Re-launching an election disinformation campaign and promoting through election day • Starting conversations around a year-end in-person strategic planning session (this one has a lot of pieces to prep!) I’m breaking these projects into small steps and doing a little each day. By September, I will feel prepared to tackle the last-minute things that are bound to come up.

With time running short and constraints on quality inventory campaigns need to get creative for ways to reach voters. Not advocating airplane banners but if a unique advertising opportunity arises do not dismiss it out of hand, as in a House race I managed a volunteer suggested an airplane banner. Skeptical at first, but when he told me the hourly cost we used it as an email fundraising contest to ask our list for banner naming suggestions. The result, our contest raised many times over the rental fee and although not the most targeted ad, the plane flew above the Stockton Asparagus Festival for 90 minutes garnering local news coverage. #politicalcampaigns #politicaladvertising
