My 10-year-old son's periodic test results arrived this week, and they left me confused. He had studied hard, yet his scores didn’t match his efforts. Curious, I sat down with him to tally the questions and understand what went wrong. As we went through the Science Question Paper, I came across a question he didn't even attempt. It was a blend of two topics: Solids, Liquids, and Gases with Shadows and Eclipse. The teacher had crafted a story-based question—a creative twist to test understanding. I was floored by the question. The question wasn’t just about knowing definitions; it demanded real-world application and conceptual clarity. My son was prepared with questions done in the class but was not really prepared with the concept taught. And, I understood that's where he lacked. It made me think— Are we teaching students to learn or just teaching them to test? Learning should not be about getting our kids ready for exams but their understanding of knowledge beyond textbooks. 📚
