In this episode of the ACHP’s Preservation Perspectives podcast, host ACHP Expert Member Monica Rhodes speaks with Eugene Cizek, a preservationist, who has served as an architect, Tulane University professor, and city planner. He also is one of the volunteers who led the movement to preserve his neighborhood, Faubourg Marigny, in New Orleans, LA. Most people are familiar with the French Quarter, which was the first historic district in the city. Wanting to preserve its own history, the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood worked with the city to do the legwork to gather the data needed to establish the historic district legislation. During this time, the residents organized and established the Faubourg Marigny Improvement Association in 1972. Soon after, the second historic district in New Orleans, the Faubourg Marigny Historic District, was created in 1974. https://lnkd.in/ek-qcVSv #NewOrleans #historicpreservation #achp #podcast #preservationperspectives

Anu Fredrikson was featured in one of the latest Polar Geopolitics podcasts (https://lnkd.in/e4ydNqgh) where she introduced the themes of the upcoming Arctic Frontiers, which CASP is looking forward to participating in – a preview of those contributions to follow over the next two weeks! In this podcast, Anu describes various facets of the central conference theme “Actions & Reactions,” including sustainable development (and what this implies), energy transition, maritime economy, and equity. She raises the compelling and often overlooked connection between thriving Arctic communities and issues of national and economic security, and international cooperation. A key issue in many northern communities is the outmigration of younger generations to lower latitudes. Without a stable population, areas in the far north do not have a nucleus around which to foster sustainable and secure homes, livelihoods, mobility, and educational opportunities. Note that this does not solely imply western-style economic development; importantly, Indigenous communities and livelihoods have been the nucleus of many northern communities for centuries and longer. Anu suggests that policymakers and other decisionmakers need strong Arctic community presence in order to make active, rather than reactive, strategies and choices. Thanks Anu for setting the stage and for Arctic Frontiers to provide this important forum. Looking forward to seeing many of you there and working together on these important issues.

Interesting and accessible podcast on Natural Capital and Land Use frameworks. Interesting to reflect on how successful models have often been grounded in high level strategic Government decisions to invest in natural capital based on the high impact costs of not doing so, rather than more complex metrics and financial modelling. https://lnkd.in/eHjCGtVK

When you learn about hydrology, have you ever thought about managing sea level rise and floods without the stereotypical human intervention of walls, wave breaks, etc.? I hadn't until I attended the Esri Geodesign Summit today and listened to Dr. Kongjian Yu speak about creating a Sponge Planet, where he said that 40% of our sea level rise problems can be reduced by allowing nature to manage water instead of our multitude of impermeable surfaces. His talk and experiment results were fascinating. If you weren't able to attend his lecture, I encourage you to watch this short TedX talk he gave last year! #esri #geodesign

New Episode Alert 🔔 🥳 Decolonizing Conservation through Local Stewardship We are thrilled to feature Javie Barcinal, a 2024 Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) Restoration Steward and founder of Dulungan Youth Organization, in our latest episode of “The Crossroad: Voices of Justice.” In this powerful conversation, Javie discusses the importance of grassroots involvement, local leadership, and community trust in the conservation movement. Here are some key insights from Javie: On Building Hope and Resilience: My hope is really rooted in seeing the people in the movement, learning more about each other’s stories, and connecting even though we’re from different socioeconomic statuses. The very human essence of these stories is what makes us strong and hopeful in this crisis. On Empowering Youth and Local Leaders: Our vision is to really have more young people, local people, and frontline communities to have a stake in their future in terms of decision-making and to make the paradigms of conservation become more equitable and regenerative by integrating social and climate justice. On Inclusivity and Trust: The very core of the work is really in care and in trust. It’s really caring more not only to the environment but also with the people that we are with in the movement and with the people that we work with. If people don’t trust you or don’t have that kind of faith in the work that you do, it’s just going to be an individual work. Tune in to this insightful episode to learn more about Javie’s impactful work and the vital role of local stewardship in decolonizing conservation efforts. 🎧 Listen to the episode here: https://lnkd.in/djfBabrz To learn more about Dulungan Youth, follow @dulungan.youth on Instagram, and follow us on Instagram(https://lnkd.in/dmDMGNeS) for more updates and episodes!. #Conservation #ClimateJustice #LocalStewardship #GrassrootsMovement #EnvironmentalJustice #Podcast #NewEpisode #DulunganYouth #GL #TheCrossroadPodcast #VoicesOfJustice
